Automatic Car Gear Modes P R N D + -
1. P (Park)
When to Use: Use this mode when the car is completely stopped and parked.
Function: It locks the transmission, preventing the car from moving. Always apply the parking brake after shifting to "P".
Tip: Never shift to "P" while the car is moving.
2. R (Reverse)
When to Use: Use this mode when you need to reverse the car.
Function: It engages the reverse gear, allowing the car to move backward.
Tip: Only shift to "R" when the car is completely stopped.
3. N (Neutral)
When to Use: Use "N" when you need to keep the car running without engaging any gear (e.g., at long traffic signals or during vehicle towing).
Function: It disconnects the engine from the wheels, allowing the car to roll freely.
Tip: Use the parking brake when in "N" to prevent the car from rolling on slopes.
4. D (Drive)
When to Use: Use this mode when you are ready to move forward.
Function: It automatically shifts gears as the car speeds up, allowing smooth driving without manual gear changes.
Tip: Just press the accelerator, and the car will manage the gear shifting itself.
5. + / - (Manual Mode or Semi-Automatic)
When to Use: Use this mode when you want more control over the gear shifting, such as on steep hills, while overtaking, or for more dynamic driving.
Function:
+ (Plus): Shift up to a higher gear.
- (Minus): Shift down to a lower gear.
Tip: This is useful for engine braking or maintaining lower gears when needed. Some cars have paddles behind the steering wheel to manage this easily.
