Maritime logistics and general logistics may seems similar but they are indeed different in operations, serving different purposes in supply chain.

While maritime logistics focuses in large scale, international sea transportation of heavy cargos from port to port or from land terminals to offshore terminals; general logistics covers broader range of multimodal systems including roads, rail, air, last-mile delivery and warehouse management.

Each plays vital roles in global trade and economic development.

Understanding this differences in operations, help improve efficiency, cost management and strategic planning across industries.

Understanding the difference in tonnage as it concerns shipping.

Ship tonnage is not theory, it affects safety, stability, port fees and operations.

Quick basics:

Gross Tonnage (GT) - Total internal volume of the ship 🚢.

Net Tonnage (NT) - Spaces that earn money onboard (Cargo & Passenger).

Lightweight (LWT) - Ships actual weight when empty.

Deadweight (DWT) - Maximum safe load of all variables ( Cargo, Fuel, Water, Crew supplies & Stores).

A Certificate of Origin (COF), is a critical international trade document certifying that goods in a shipment were entirely obtained, produced, manufactured, or processed in a specific country. It acts as a "nationality" document for cargo, enabling customs authorities to determine applicable duties, taxes, and trade restrictions.

CO's are very important tools for promoting transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making in international commerce. Most CO's processing are digital in most advance ports, though paper versions are used more elsewhere.

For governments, CO's are essential in enforcing trade policies and upholding national security and foreign policy objectives. Customs officials rely on these electronic documents to identify and prevent the entry of prohibited goods from nations that engage in human rights abuses, support terrorism, or threaten international security.

These documents also support fair labor standard practices, protect worker's rights, and welfare, enabling government and intergovernmental bodies to enforce trade policies, sanctions, and embargoes. By requiring exporters to declare the origin of their goods, CO's help identify products manufactured under unethical or exploitative conditions, such as sweetshops or forced labor. This transparency can support those wanting to take action based on ethical, environmental, and socioeconomic considerations.

They are vital for implementing international treaties and agreements to protect the environment, such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. By mandating CO's for certain products, government's can better monitor and regulate the trade of endangered species, combat illegal wildlife trafficking, and promote the sustainable use of natural resources.

Key aspects of a Cargo Certificate of Origin include:

âś“ Purpose: It is primarily used to verify the origin of goods to apply for preferential tariff treatment under trade agreements, or to comply with import restrictions, quotas, and anti-dumping regulations.

âś“ Types:

• Preferential: Used to claim reduced or zero duties under free trade agreements or preferential arrangements.

• Non-Preferential: Used for general trade, ensuring goods meet origin requirements for statistical or regulatory purposes.

• Issuance: Typically issued local Chambers of Commerce, or in some cases, government authorities.

• Information Included: Details generally include the export/import information, cargo description, HS code, and the country of origin.

Without this document, goods will likely face higher tariff, delays, or penalties at customs.

Understanding of CHARTERER PARTY, SPEED and FUEL CONSUMPTIONS:

Under a time charter contract between the Charterer and the Ship Owner, the Ship Owner “warrants” that his vessel will perform within the parameters specified under the description clause. Failure to perform as per the speed and fuel consumption specified may cause “breach of contract” and result in a claim for damages by the Charterer.

Most of the ship owner stating that
vessel is capable of maintaining from beginning sea passage to end of sea passage on both Laden and ballast passages, with agreed average speed/consumption during weather days up to Beaufort 4 and Douglas sea state 3 with combined wave and swell heights NTE (not to exceed) 1.25 m without adverse currents, being on even keel and excluding periods during which reduction of speed for safety, congestion or reduced visibility etc,.

Speed claim means that speed of a vessel should perform at the prescribed speed with prevailing Beaufort 4 and Douglas sea state 3.If the vessel is not performing at this speed, then the charterer may make a speed claim

Overconsumption means that the vessel is using more fuel per day than specified in the charter-party.

Charterer party appointed weather routing company to determine the prevailing weather conditions enroute and suitably guide the vessel to take the shortest route, also study the effect of the weather on the vessel speed and thus as an independent party, have an important say in the vessel performance. Especially so if the contract stipulates that in the event of a dispute, the opinion of a routing company would be sought.

To avoid speed claim and overconsumption claim, It is advisable that vessel should monitor and perform as per charter party speed and consumption at agreed weather, sea state, swell, wind speed , wave height and current condition in daily basis.

Note
----
Beaufort scale:The Beaufort scale is an empirical measure that relates wind speed to observed conditions at sea or on land.

Douglas scale: It is a scale which measures the height of the waves and also measures the swell of the sea.

Swell height: It is typically the average of the largest third of all waves.

Combined wave and swell heights : It is total wave height, also known as significant wave height, describes the combined height of the sea and the swell that mariners experience on open waters.

A Notice of Readiness (NOR) is a formal document (notification) issued by the ship's master to the charterer (cargo owner) indicating that the vessel is prepared to commence loading or discharging cargo at the agreed-upon port.
It serves as an important document in the shipping industry, marking the beginning of laytime
(the period allowed for cargo operations).

Key points about NOR:
ℹPurpose: To inform the charterer that the ship is ready to start loading or discharging cargo.
ℹTiming: Typically issued upon the vessel's arrival at the designated port or berth.
ℹRequirements: The ship must be ready in all respects for cargo operations, including having necessary equipment and documentation.
ℹLaytime: The NOR serves as the starting point for calculating laytime, which is the period during which the charterer can load or discharge cargo without incurring demurrage charges.
ℹDemurrage: If the charterer exceeds the allotted laytime, they may be liable for demurrage charges to compensate the shipowner for the delay.

In essence, the NOR is a formal declaration that the ship is ready for business and that the clock is ticking for the cargo operations to commence.
