Have you ever noticed the large, shiny exhausts on top of our inland tankers? On inland tankers, you see two common exhaust configurations. At the stern of the ship or on the deck. On our inland tankers, in this case the Stolt Main, the exhaust is located on the deck, in a vertical arrangement. But why three?

The large exhaust is from the main engine and discharges the combustion gases from the propulsion system. The smaller pipes underneath it belong to the generators or auxiliary systems on board, which provide electricity and support for all onboard installations.

This separation is functional. Different engines have different loads, usage, and exhaust characteristics, and are therefore discharged separately to keep the system stable, maintainable, and efficient.

What appears to be a shiny detail at first glance is, in reality, a direct reflection of how the onboard power supply is structured. Next to that, it is one of the details that is always proudly maintained by our crew ♥️

Some tankers, like our future ELW-tankers, stand out because they are new. Others because they quietly keep performing, year after year, without compromise. The Stolt Neckar belongs without a doubt to the second category.

Built in 1992 at Dutch shipyard De Hoop in Lobith/Tolkamer, she was designed for safe transport of liquid chemicals across Europe’s waterways. With a capacity of around 2,100 tonnes and a length of approximately 86 meters, she remains a steady, reliable and easy to deploy tankers for daily operations across northwest Europe.

What makes her particularly relevant today is not just her durability, but the standards she continues to meet. The Stolt Neckar is Green Award Binnenvaart Bronze certified, reflecting a clear commitment to safety, environmental performance and responsible navigation.

Named after the Neckar River. A 367-kilometer-long, picturesque tributary of the Rhine in southwestern Germany. The river is known for its fairytale castles, vineyards, and historic student cities, and flows into the Rhine near Mannheim.

Another milestone for our very first stainless steel “ELW” (Extra Low Water) tanker.

From the Bengbu shipyard in China, the hull has now officially been launched and successfully touched the water for the very first time.

Soon, this hull will begin its journey to the Netherlands, where the final outfitting and completion will take place at BREKO Shipbuilding & Repair / PSI Piping, Papendrecht. Did you notice there is no name on the hull yet? We will keep this a secret a little longer…

With the first hull touching the water and being prepared for transport to the Netherlands, we will soon see our second sister hull heading for the water.

“Die Menschen und die Schifffahrt, das war mein ganzes Leben.” - José

After no less than 36 years, we are saying goodbye to José, a familiar face within Stolt-Nielsen Inland Tanker Service. His career began back then through a colleague at Hamburger-Lloyd, where he started as a helmsman. What followed was an impressive career on the water, with a total of 41 years in shipping.

During a joint dinner with the crew of the Stolt Main, we reflected on this special moment.

For José, the work was always about more than just sailing. The camaraderie on board, the contact with colleagues, and coming together during training are memories that are dearest to him. “The community among us, that made it special.”

Over the years, he saw the company change. Especially in the area of safety and the way people are treated. “At Stolt, they really listen. Suggestions and comments are taken seriously.”

His colleagues know him as someone who takes his work seriously. Precise, driven, and always with an eye for quality, without unnecessary delays. But there was also room for fun, especially in the early years: getting each other wet while cleaning the deck and just laughing together.

What he will miss, is clear: the people and life on the water. Now, he is mainly looking forward to more time with his family and enjoying his hobbies. His last words for the next generation is clear: stay with Stolt and appreciate the way people are treated here.

José, thank you for all those years of dedication, commitment, and craftsmanship. We wish you a wonderful and well-deserved retirement!

Once on board our tankers, you see an impressive spectacle of piping and gauges on the deck. But do you know why they are located on top?

When transporting product, everything revolves around safety, control, and flexibility. That is why all the piping are deliberately positioned on the deck.

Here’s why: it ensures leaks are immediately visible, vapors cannot gather, and different cargoes remain strictly separated. Moreover, this also has operational benefits as it makes loading, unloading, and maintenance much more efficient.

See one of our tankers, or those of our partners carrying the Stolt Nielsen flag sailing by closely, take the time to witness hundreds of meter piping on deck. It remains a great sight for our crew.

Working on a tanker requires the mindset of someone who would rather be on the water than at the quay. You work long days, are away from home frequently, and have the responsibility for both the crew as well as thousands of liters of product. In that case, it is certainly not a luxury that the basics on board are well organized.

Our inland tankers are modernly equipped, with comfortable accommodations where you can truly retreat during your moments of rest. A place where you can recharge, so you can return to work rested.

Take a look on board the Stolt IJssel. A tanker that entered service in 2022 and remains a delightful place to stay for its crew to this day.

Recently the Stolt Maas had a short pitstop at BREKO Shipbuilding & Repair / PSI Piping. The reason for mooring was the replacement of an essential component of our cargo handling system.

The pipestack of our MarFlex Deepwell Pump Double has been replaced. Serving as the connection between the pump in the tank and the deck, it is a critical element in ensuring efficient liquid cargo handling.

Replacing this component requires precision work. From disassembly and inspection to the precise placement and alignment of the new pipestack, the people from MarFlex know how to deal with these repairs.

With these works done, the Stolt Maas is once again fully operational for its daily operations.

A major milestone reached in the construction of one of our new ELW tankers.

Recently, the 'Main Hull Completion Ceremony' took place, marking the successful completion of the hull for one of our two 110m duplex stainless steel inland waterway tankers.

A special moment that represents close collaboration between all partners involved in bringing these tankers to life. With the hull now completed, we move on to the next phase in which the hull will soon be transported to the Netherlands.

We look forward to sharing more updates as these tankers take further shape. 👉Follow us for the latest updates.
