From life on the inland waterways to outdoor activities close to the sea during our annually crew event.

We recently headed to the beach for two days out with colleagues from our owned and chartered fleet, along with the vessel owners. No tankers, locks or waterways this time, but blow karting and kite flying instead, followed by a delicious barbecue to round off the day. Luckily, there was no shortage of wind, which certainly put everyone's skills to the test!

A great opportunity to catch up with colleagues outside our daily work environment, try something new together and, above all, have a good time. At Stolt-Nielsen, we value these personal connections. After all, strong teamwork starts with colleagues who know each other, trust each other and can rely on one another.

We look back on two successful days with a great group of colleagues!

From October 5 to 8, Stolt-Nielsen Inland Tanker Service is in Vienna for the 60th edition of the EPCA Annual Meeting. An event where the petrochemical industry and its logistics partners come together.

The theme ‘Rethinking Resilience’ resonates with challenges we know well in the inland shipping sector. Low water levels and shifting cargo flows require forward planning and close coordination between producers, carriers, and terminals.

That is why the team is here to hear what matters to our customers and discuss how we can ensure their products continue to reach their destinations reliably in the years ahead.

It is a situation you never want to experience, yet one for which you must always be prepared. A fire on board demands effective cooperation. Not only among the crew but also with the emergency services coming on board.

For this reason, a joint fire drill was recently held on board the Piz Bellavista in the harbor from Tholen. The scenario involved a small fire in the front engine room, with the Tholen-Stad Fire Department practicing the response alongside the crew.

Upon arrival, the fire department first assessed the situation. The captain and crew assisted by sharing their knowledge of the tanker, its layout, and the available equipment. Additionally, a second source of firefighting water was established via the rescue boat as an extra safety measure.

This collaboration is a crucial aspect of such an exercise. The crew knows the tanker inside out, while the fire department brings its own firefighting expertise and operational procedures. By combining these in a real-world scenario, the team practices not only the firefighting response itself but also communication and the division of tasks during those critical moments when every minute counts.

The drill went according to plan, and the simulated fire was successfully brought under control. It was a valuable practical training exercise for both our crew and the emergency services in Tholen.

From the outside, you can barely tell the difference. But what’s inside our tankers makes a huge difference regarding what cargo they are allowed to carry.

For instance, one tanker might have stainless steel tanks, while another operates with coated tanks. And no, that isn’t just a matter of a different finish. In one type of tank, the stainless steel itself is the surface that comes into contact with the cargo. In the other, a specially applied coating forms the protective layer between the cargo and the steel from the tank.

Some cargoes are perfectly suited to a coated tank, whereas other chemical cargoes specifically require stainless steel. It all comes down to how the product reacts with the material it comes into contact with.

So, when we receive a new cargo shipment, we don’t just look at which tanker is nearby and has sufficient capacity. We also ask ourselves the question if the cargo is actually suitable for that specific ship?

If you see one of our tankers passing by, you won’t notice this from the outside. But for our office team, and of course for the cargo itself, it makes a world of difference.

Keeping a fleet moving takes more than tankers and schedules. It takes the right people in the right place, with the support and opportunities they need to do their job well. Since joining Stolt-Nielsen Inland Tanker Service (SNITS) in June 2026, that has been at the heart of Erik’s role as Crewing Manager.

It’s a role that rarely follows a fixed schedule. One moment he’s working on crew planning or recruitment, the next he’s speaking with captains and crew members, arranging training or looking at how things can be done smarter. You’ll find him wherever he’s needed. At the office in Rotterdam, on board or out with colleagues.

And that variety suits him. What matters most is being able to make a difference, whether that means finding the right person for the team, helping a colleague develop or improving a process that makes everyone’s work a little easier.

It’s also what attracted him to SNITS. Being part of Stolt-Nielsen means having the knowledge, support and opportunities of a professional international organisation behind you. At the same time, SNITS is a close-knit team where there’s room to take responsibility, bring in your own experience and turn ideas into action.

For him, that combination makes SNITS a place where he can contribute and continue to build and doing this with the people who keep the operation moving every day.

Meet the Stolt Pride, a chemical tanker in the Stolt Tankers fleet. At 185 meters long, she's about one and a half times the length of a football pitch. She's over 32 meters wide, with a draught of around 12 meters. With a gross tonnage of 29,903 and a carrying capacity of 38,961 tonnes, the Stolt Pride is almost ten times the size of the Stolt Ludwigshafen, our biggest inland tanker.

Built in 2016, she was designed to carry liquid cargo across the world's oceans. Stolt Tankers operates at sea, while Stolt-Nielsen Inland Tanker Service moves cargo along Europe's rivers and canals.

Together, they cover everything from specialised inland tankers to some of the largest chemical tankers afloat. The Stolt Pride is one of 167 vessels in the Stolt Tankers fleet, but the fleet is only half the story.

Behind every ship lies the same challenge: getting cargo like chemicals from A to B safely, reliably and efficiently. That is the strength of Stolt Tankers.

Historically low water levels create scenes you normally do not encounter. Ships maneuver through the still-accessible waterways, with people watching from the banks as captains carefully navigate the low water levels. On dried-up sections of the Rhine, people are even searching for hidden “treasures” that have suddenly become accessible. At the Kaub gauge, one of the key reference points for Rhine water levels, the water level dropped to 6.

In the midst of this extraordinary setting, the Stolt Ludwigshafen remains active carrying cargo up to 850 tonnes. Thanks to its design, this tanker is one of the tankers that remains active on the Rhine even under these conditions. An impressive sight, but for Stolt-Nielsen Inland Tanker Service, it is also exactly where craftsmanship and experience come together.

And while we are getting the most out of our existing fleet today, we are also looking ahead. With new ELW (Extra Low Water) Tankers, we are responding to the changing climate. In this way, we continue to work on reliable and optimal transport. Even when the river shows its lowest side.

Summer may slow things down on shore, however on board it’s “business as usual”.

Across Europe, our inland tanker fleet remains active throughout the holiday season, transporting essential products safely from A to B and this with historical low water levels in river Rhine.

A big thank you to all our captains and crew members who keep our tankers moving throughout the year and under current extreme conditions. Essential transport does not take a summer break.
