BAJ Driver App: Android or iPhone — Which One Should You Use?

An important update for BAJ drivers across New Zealand.

Most BAJ driver services are available on both Android and iPhone, including Ride Bidding, Outstation, tourism-related jobs and the BAJ Driver Operator Network / New Zealand Driver Marketplace.

However, BAJ Taxi and the in-app taximeter currently require an Android device.

BAJ Nationwide Driver Onboarding Update

Thank you to everyone who has registered to drive with BAJ across New Zealand.

We are currently reviewing a high volume of driver and fleet applications from multiple cities and regions. Because BAJ is preparing for a nationwide rollout rather than launching in just one location, the verification process is taking a little longer than usual.

Our team is still checking submitted documents, reviewing driver and vehicle information, identifying applicants who may need TSL-related support, and preparing the next stage of onboarding.

If you registered one, two or even a few weeks ago and your documents are still showing as pending, this does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your application.

At this stage, we expect the remaining verification and onboarding preparation to take approximately another 2–3 weeks. Approved drivers will then be brought onboard in larger groups as the nationwide rollout progresses.

If we need any additional information or updated documents from you, our team will contact you directly by email, phone or WhatsApp.

Please do not submit another application unless you are specifically asked to do so.

We also recommend following the BAJ New Zealand page. We will continue sharing driver updates, answers to common questions, platform information and the next steps as we move closer to launch.

You will also start seeing more customer-focused BAJ advertising across New Zealand as we prepare to bring passenger demand and driver availability together.

BAJ Driver Payment Update

More flexibility is now available for BAJ drivers when receiving passenger payments.

For eligible bookings, passengers can pay directly to the driver by cash or EFTPOS. Drivers who use their own EFTPOS machine can process the payment through their own merchant account, meaning the funds go directly to the driver.

Where a passenger pays using a registered credit or debit card through BAJ, the payment is processed through the platform and the driver’s eligible earnings are paid according to the BAJ settlement cycle, normally within 3 working days after settlement.

Drivers using the BAJ wallet system must maintain sufficient wallet balance to accept applicable bookings, as platform charges are automatically deducted from the wallet.

Drivers should always check the payment method shown in the BAJ Driver App before collecting payment. Accepted rides must remain within the BAJ platform and must not be cancelled simply to complete the same journey privately or avoid applicable platform charges.

Receipts can also be provided for completed rides, including electronic receipts where available.

Which Vehicle Should You Select in the BAJ Driver App?

BAJ supports different vehicle categories for Ride Bidding, Taxi, wheelchair-accessible transport and larger group travel across New Zealand.

BAJ – Standard vehicle for Ride Bidding
Comfort – Premium 4-passenger vehicle and minimum Taxi category
BAJ XL – 5-passenger vehicle with additional luggage space
Wheelchair – Wheelchair-accessible vehicle
Maxi Van – 10-seater passenger van

BAJ also uses a vehicle downgrade system — eligible higher-category vehicles can receive suitable lower-category jobs. For example, Comfort can receive BAJ Ride Bidding jobs, while BAJ XL can receive BAJ XL, Comfort and eligible Ride Bidding jobs.

Taxi vehicles must meet the applicable requirements, including an NZTA-approved in-vehicle camera and an in-car EFTPOS/payment facility.

Not sure which vehicle category to select in the BAJ Driver App?

Here’s a simple guide to help drivers select the correct vehicle category.

BAJ – Ride Bidding only. Suitable for standard cars and hatchbacks.
Comfort – Minimum category for Taxi services. Premium 4-seat vehicle.
BAJ XL – Larger 5-seat vehicle with additional luggage space.
Wheelchair – For wheelchair-accessible vehicles carrying at least one wheelchair passenger.
Maxi Van – 10-seater passenger van.

For Taxi categories, drivers must have an NZTA-approved in-vehicle camera and an in-car payment/EFTPOS machine. A normal dash camera is not accepted for the Taxi category.

BAJ is for Ride Bidding only and is not a Taxi category. For Taxi services, select Comfort or the appropriate higher category according to your vehicle.
