2.39 m. That's the clearance under the Tinwald rail bridge in Ashburton, and KiwiRail says it gets hit about 13 times a year 😬

In January a campervan lost its roof there, about a month after repairs and a new impact beam went in.

Know your height before you go, not when you get there.

What category is my load? 📏

Find your width and read across. That gives you your category and the minimum number of pilots, by day and at night.

• 2.55–3.1 m: Cat 1, no pilot needed*
• 3.1–3.7 m: Cat 1, 1 pilot (by day, only over 40 km/h)
• 3.7–4.5 m: Cat 2, 1 pilot by day, 2 at night
• 4.5–5 m: Cat 3, 2 pilots
• 5–11 m: Cat 4A, 3 pilots, purple lights
• Over 11 m: Cat 4B, 3 pilots, plus a route engineering check

*Unless the load crosses the centre-line.

Long or overhanging? Over 25 m long, or any overhang over 7 m, puts you in Cat 2 or higher, even if you're narrow.

Pilot numbers are minimums. Your permit rules. Save this for your crew 👇

Always follow road conditions, follow permit conditions. This is not legal advice.

Most drivers think I'm there to slow them down.

I'm actually there to stop you meeting 5 metres of house on a blind corner.

When you see a pilot vehicle coming, here's all I need from you:
👉 Slow down early
👉 Pull as far left as it's safe to
👉 Stop if you need to, and wait for the load.

(It's the law, by the way: not making way for a pilot vehicle is a $150 fine.)

That's it. Small part of your day, and everyone gets home.

What's the one thing you've never understood about pilot vehicles? Ask me anything below 👇

Drivers will often assume the load pilot is in charge & fully responsible for what happens on the road. But unless a different on-road supervisor’s been named, that’s backwards - by law, the responsibility falls back on the driver.

That doesn’t mean the road’s yours, though. OD loads don’t own the road - it’s a team effort out there, even when it doesn’t feel like it with oncoming traffic bearing down on you.

That’s why this needs to be a conversation before the load moves - not assumed, not left to whoever speaks up first on the day. Every load’s case by case, and pilot roles can shift depending on the job. But if the on-road supervisor role hasn’t been discussed, it’s on the driver by default.

Our checklist puts that conversation in front of your operator pre-trip - signage, lighting, who’s responsible for what. And it saves straight to your profile, so if anything happens out there, you’ve got a clear record everyone knew where they stood before the wheels turned.

Prepped beats sorry, every time.

The job HAULR was built to support.

When telling people about the app, we’ve had the conversation of it being very niche.

That is the point. The core of HAULR & our plans after launching are niche, niche to support OD operators.

The next thing is to support truck drivers around New Zealand. Which all parts of HAULR does.

The exciting part that isn’t niche, is anyone can jump on HAULR once launched. You don’t have to be a load pilot, a truck driver - it’s here to support road working crews waiting to see when that 9 metre wide house is coming through.

Support motorhome users that the height of their motorhome is a bit too high & get caught out around the country. It happens. Tinwald Bridge. Ashburton - too many times.

So while HAULR is niche for where we are from in the industry, it’s here to support more than our OD operators.

We are close, we are excited.
