𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲 stepping off a train at Blake Park and walking straight into the heart of Bay sports and events.

A regional passenger rail service connecting Ōmokoroa in the north with Te Puke in the south could transform access to Mount Maunganui’s premier sporting precinct.

Fans and players alike could travel comfortably to:

• Cricket matches and concerts at Bay Oval
• Rugby games and community events
• Netball tournaments
• Hockey competitions
• Squash matches
• Skate park sessions
• Activities at the local sport and recreation club

Instead of traffic congestion and packed car parks, people could arrive by train from across the Western Bay of Plenty — students, families, sports teams, tourists, and event crowds alike.

On major event days, trains could become part of the atmosphere:

Supporters travelling together
Easier movement between communities
Safer transport after concerts and evening events
Reduced pressure on Mount Maunganui roads

A station near Blake Park could become more than just a transport stop — it could be a gateway to sport, recreation, and community connection for the entire region.

The success of a one-off train service between Auckland and Tauranga has some calling for a permanent link. Heidi Hughes was one of the driving forces behind getting the train on the tracks. She spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Over half of New Zealand’s population lives in the Golden Triangle, and it is one of the fastest-growing parts of the country — it makes sense to have a modern, safe and efficient train service between Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.  Te Huia is already showing how passenger rail c...

"The Kaimai Express was an opportunity to take a rail journey that hasn’t been on offer for decades. But for many of the people on board, their most fervent wish was that it would one day be the boring old usual."

The Kaimai Express was a trip to a less car-dominated past. It may also have been a small taste of the future.

It’s been 25 years since Tranz Rail scrapped regular passenger rail between Auckland and Tauranga. But a sold-out excursion at the weekend has reignited calls to bring it back.

🚆💛WOW! The turnout for Te Huia to Tauranga was HUGE!💛🚆

Hundreds of people showed up yesterday to Stack the Station and celebrate Te Huia — sending a clear message that this service is loved, valued, and ready to grow.

We were proud to hear *cross-party* support for the future of Te Huia and a Golden Triangle by Train, with local MP speakers including:
New Zealand National Party's 💙 Tama Potaka and Ryan Hamilton MP for Hamilton East 💙 and New Zealand Labour Party's ❤️Georgie Dansey ❤️ showing their support for Te Huia and it's growth to Tauranga

🫶 A huge thank you to every supporter, community advocate, volunteer, and whānau member who brought signs, colour, energy, and heart. This was a joyful, powerful show of what community support looks like 🫶

The call is clear: more frequent services, more stops, and extending Te Huia to connect Auckland, Waikato, and the Bay of Plenty.

👉 Next step: sign the petition (link in comments) and keep the momentum going 🚆✨

Huge thanks to those who helped set up, share and attended including but not limited to
