What is a shipping Container?
Let me explain about the containers today for the people are studying in logistics field.
A shipping container is a strong steel ( or sometimes aluminum) box designed to protect cargo from weather, theft, and damage. Most containers are built according to international ISO standards, so they can be handled by cranes, trucks, trains and ships worldwide.
Let’s talk about common container sizes,
There are two sizes of containers for typically usages,
1). 20ft ( 20’/TEU ) - 20ft ( 6.06m )
Typical maximum payload should be 28tonnes and especially best for heavy cargo such as machinery, minerals, and canned goods.
2). 40ft (40’/2TEU ) - 40ft (12.19m )
Typical maximum payload should be between 26 and 28 tonnes and especially great for the large-volume cargo like furniture, clothing, and electronics.
So, what is TEU that we called?
TEU means Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit is the standard unit used to measure container ship capacity:
1 x 20ft container = 1 TEU
1 x 40ft container = 2 TEU
Generally can be called as FEU for 40ft container and 1 x 40ft container = 1 FEU ( Forty-foot Equivalent Unit )
Now let’s talk about main types of containers,
* Dry Container ( General Purpose )
The most common type for dry goods.
* High Cube Container
Extra height for bulky cargo.
* Refrigerated( Re**er ) Container
Temperature-controlled for food,medicine, flowers, and seafood.
* Open Top Container
Used for cargo loaded from above, such as machinery.
* Flat Rack Container
For oversized equipment, vehicles, and heavy machinery.
*Open Side Container
Side doors allow easier loading of long cargo.
*Tank Container ( Tanktainer, TT )
Designed for liquids, chemicals, and food-grade liquids.
