APO WHANG-OD TRIVIA NOT EVERYONE KNOWS 💚
1. She refused to marry
She had 2 fiancés before but both passed away. After that, she dedicated her life to tattooing and her village. She has no children.
2. She’s left-handed
Most mambabatok are right-handed, but Apo is a lefty. That’s why her tattoo strokes are unique.
3. No fixed price
She doesn’t charge. You give what you can - rice, chicken, money. But now with tourists, the suggested donation is ₱500 - ₱1000 for small tattoos.
4. Warrior apprentice
She started learning at 15 from her father. Before, she only tattooed warriors and women of the tribe. Tourists came much later in the 2000s.
5. Same tools for 80+ years
Pomelo thorn + bamboo stick + charcoal ink. Same 1000-year-old method. Nothing changed.
6. Farmer first
Tattooing is only part-time. Her main work is farming rice and raising pigs and chickens in Buscalan.
7. National Living Treasure nominee
She was nominated for GAMABA Award in 2018. The whole world recognizes her even without the official title yet.
8. She can’t read or write
But she remembers every design and every person she tattooed. Her memory is still sharp at 100+ years old.
9. She chooses who to tattoo
If you’re disrespectful to the culture, she won’t tattoo you even with money. Respect matters to her.
10. Shaky hands, perfect lines
Her hands shake, but once she starts tattooing, the lines are straight. 80+ years of muscle memory.
