Leadership and Management Tip

Here 6 Tips of Dr Christian Poengen relating to ensuring meeting effectiveness, each supported by examples from well-known leaders. Comment below if you have been practicing any of these tips.

1. Set a Clear Agenda

Guideline: Start every meeting with a specific agenda.
Purpose: Keeps discussions focused and helps participants prepare.
Tip: Share the agenda beforehand so everyone arrives ready.
Example: Jeff Bezos insists on distributing a detailed agenda before meetings to ensure focus and preparedness.

2. Keep Meetings Small

Guideline: Limit attendees to essential participants.
Purpose: Smaller groups foster engagement and faster decisions.
Tip: Aim for five or fewer participants for depth and clarity.
Example: Steve Jobs preferred small meetings to encourage meaningful discussion and quick decisions.

3. Stay Standing

Guideline: Conduct meetings while standing.
Purpose: Standing meetings are shorter and more focused.
Tip: Use them for brief updates to maintain energy.
Example: Richard Branson recommends standing meetings for concise, productive discussions.

4. Rotate Meeting Locations

Guideline: Change the setting regularly.
Purpose: Fresh environments inspire creativity and prevent monotony.
Tip: Hold meetings in different office areas or outdoors.
Example: Mark Zuckerberg rotates meeting locations to keep discussions dynamic and creative.

5. Assign Roles

Guideline: Define roles like leader, note-taker, and timekeeper.
Purpose: Ensures organization and accountability.
Tip: Assign roles at the start to streamline the meeting.
Example: Sheryl Sandberg emphasizes the importance of defined roles for efficiency.

6. End with Action Items

Guideline: Conclude with clear action steps and responsibilities.
Purpose: Ensures outcomes lead to follow-through.
Tip: Identify who’s responsible for each task and deadlines.
Example: Elon Musk ends meetings with defined next steps so everyone knows their responsibilities.

By setting a clear agenda, keeping meetings small and energetic, rotating environments, assigning roles, and closing with concrete actions, organizations can make meetings more productive, engaging, and results-oriented.

I am reminded why I do this.

Hindi ito tungkol sa posisyon, o papogi, o this is about making sure our seafarers are never alone in calm or in storm.

Kaya ngayong araw, habang binibigyang-pugay natin ang ating mga bayani sa dagat, sana ma-rediscover din natin ang ating inner heroism bilang lingkod-bayan.

Let’s continue serving with grit, grace, and genuine love for our maritime frontliners.

Dahil sa bawat hakbang na ginagawa natin para sa kanila, we’re also sailing towards a stronger, prouder Philippines

ANTICIPATED OIL PRICE CRISIS: WHO’S BEING LEFT BEHIND?

While the global oil shock triggered by the Israel-Iran conflict is hitting us hard, it’s our local transport heroes who will bleed daily.

By Tuesday, news stories forecast an increase of oil products to as much as Php 4.00/liter.

Jeepney and tricycle drivers have caught the government’s attention — with subsidies rolling in and radio stations amplifying their plight. In short, pinag uusapan na ang ayuda na pwedeng ibigay.

But what about our small boat and banca operators quietly ferrying people and goods across islands? They move sacks of rice, school kids, produce, medicines pero mukhang hindi kasama sa headline, no airtime, no relief in sight. Gaya ng sabi ko dati, either mahina ang mga narratives natin or sadyang kulang tayo sa pansin.

These small boat or banca operators are the unseen backbone of our archipelagic economy. Every oil hike eats into what little they earn, forcing them to either to stop their operations or to absorb the cost and barely survive.

Their boats may be small, but their role is massive: connecting communities, enabling trade, and keeping our island lifelines alive. Isn’t it time we include them in the national conversation?

Let’s push for equitable fuel subsidies, targeted support, and recognition of all frontline transport workers kasama na ang sea-based industry sa domestic sector.

Because no sector should be invisible when the price of oil becomes a matter of survival.
