French-based global liner company CMA CGM says it has entered into exclusive discussions with rival operator Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) and its controlling shareholder, Lentor Investments on a potential combination. The exclusivity period is expected to run until 7 December.

CMA CGM said that, “should these discussions lead to an agreement, such a combination would contribute to the consolidation of the container shipping industry, at a time when scale is more critical than ever.” it would also reinforce CMA CGM as a global force in container shipping.

October volumes up 6.3 percent at Port of Long Beach

Increased exports drove a 6.3 percent surge in cargo handling at the Port of Long Beach in October, compared with the same month last year, according to a port release.

A total of 619,983 TEUs passed through the port in October, the port said.

Exports rose 6.5 percent to 127,308 TEUs in October year-over-year, and while imports were down a bit — amounting to 307,995 TEUs — the number of empties grew 20.8 percent to 183,681.

Long Beach Port CEO Jon Slangerup said 2015 is "shaping up to be one of our best years ever."

Maersk Line, the world's largest container shipping company, said Wednesday it will slash costs, cut staff by almost a fifth and pull out of vessel orders as trade along the Asia to Europe trades weaken.

The plans come two weeks after A.P. Moller-Maersk cut its 2015 profit forecast by 15 percent, blaming a slowdown in the container shipping market.

Triton Container International and TAL International Group announced that they would merge to create the world’s largest lessor of intermodal freight containers with a combined container fleet of nearly five million TEUs and revenue earning assets of $8.7 billion.

Triton was founded in 1980 and is currently owned by Warburg Pincus and Vestar Capital Partners, along with other private investors, including members of Triton management. Located in Bermuda, Triton operates a container fleet of 2.4 million TEUs, services its customers through 19 subsidiary offices in 13 countries.

TAL International, located in Delaware, operates a container fleet of 2.4 million TEUs, and services its customers through 17 offices in 11 countries.

The companies say the merger will create the world’s largest intermodal container leasing company with a container fleet of 4.8 million TEUs, resulting in enhanced container supply capability.

The combined company expects to realize $40 million per year in annual SG&A synergies, by aligning infrastructure and creating a best-in-class systems environment.

Dubai’s Emirates Skycargo outpaced the airfreight market with a 10% rise in volumes to 1.25m tonnes during the first six months of the financial year.

Emirates Group, which includes ground handler dnata, described the airline cargo figures from April to September as “a solid performance that continues to buck the market trend”.

Emirates' cargo arm — with a fleet of 13 Boeing 777s and two B747s — is weighing up further freighter orders after it took delivery of the final all-cargo aircraft on its current orderbook earlier this year.

Carriers face a sea of green

While ocean carriers and ports scramble to cut their greenhouse gas emissions to comply with various regulations, international organizations want them to do even more — by paying a carbon tax.

For example, as the nations of the world prepare for the major climate change summit COP21 in Paris later this month, the International Transportation Forum, an intergovernmental body of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, is calling for a carbon tax on ocean shipping of about $25 per ton of CO2 to curb emissions in the coming decades. On top of that, the ITF says operators should reduce their carbon emissions by one-half over the next 35 years, and get to zero emissions by 2080.

"The impact on maritime trade would be marginal if the tax were set at around $25 per ton of CO2," ITF said in a report. The forum added that the receipts of a carbon tax could provide a "substantial source" of financing – about $26 billion – for the UN’s Green Climate Fund, and also return a portion of that money to poorer nations.

Seatruck adds third ship
[ November 4, 2015 // Chris ]

Irish Sea ro ro specialist Seatruck Ferries is to add a third vessel to its Liverpool-Dublin route, from 17 November. It says that the resulting additional midweek departures will provide much needed peak capacity on a route with increasing unaccompanied traffic.

Seatruck explains that driver shortages are causing operators to switch to unaccompanied movements from ports, which reduces road mileage compared with the transit through Wales or Scotland.

Data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has identified a slight growth in global air freight markets during September. However, overall, air cargo volumes remain 1.2% down from their 2014 year-end peak.

In September, air cargo volumes, measured in freight tonne kilometres, rose by 1.0 per cent compared to the same month a year ago. This was also a slight improvement on the August performance when volumes were broadly stable.

IATA also confirm that the latest results varied widely by region. Carriers in the Middle East reported the most significant growth (7.5 per cent) followed by European (2.8 per cent) and African airlines (2.5 per cent). Asia-Pacific based airlines recorded negligible growth (0.3 per cent).
