This ridge was planned once before.

More than a century ago, under British rule, Thandiani was surveyed and planned as a hill town. Then the First World War came, and the plan was shelved.

Every other hill station in Galiyat kept growing. Thandiani was left alone, and for more than a hundred years the forest kept it.

Planned once, then left. History preserved it.

This time, the plan comes first.

Above Zero has appointed Ecosign of Canada to master plan Thandiani's 400 kanals - Pakistan's first purpose-planned, four-season mountain town.

In 50 years, Ecosign has completed more than 1,000 projects across 46 countries, with landmark work in Switzerland, China, Japan and the USA, and Olympic venues from Vancouver to Beijing. Its name combines two words: ecological and design.

Pakistan has some of the most extraordinary mountains on earth. Until now, it had never planned a destination to match them. That is what they were hired for.

The plan is being drawn around the forest that is already standing. Unlike the seasonal hill stations around it, Above Zero is designed to live through all four seasons, including winter, bringing year-round commercial activity in hospitality, food services, guiding, maintenance, transport and retail.

Highlights from the Above Zero Thandiani Meet & Greet at Abbottabad Club last week.

A fine afternoon with members of the local press and community.

We came to answer questions about Above Zero - about the framework, the forest, and what this project means for Hazara. And to listen.

Thank you to everyone who came, and to everyone who asked something difficult.

Thandiani at 9,000 feet.

The last undeveloped ridge in Galiyat, two and a half hours from Islamabad and a world away from it.

What you're watching is deodar and pine that has stood through a century and a half of everything Pakistan has been through. Snow that arrives properly here, at an altitude where winter still means something. A night sky with no city near enough to spoil it.

No music will do it justice. No camera will either. But this is closer than most people ever get.
