Walk through the old streets of Lisbon and you’ll notice something beautiful almost everywhere you look — the famous Portuguese azulejos.

These decorative ceramic tiles have been part of Portuguese architecture for centuries. You’ll find them covering old houses, churches, palaces and traditional buildings throughout Lisbon. Beyond their beauty, azulejos became an important part of Portugal’s architectural identity, sometimes depicting patterns, religious scenes and moments from history.
