Scarred by the 1755 earthquake and gutted by fire in 1959, Lisbon’s Church of São Domingos was left with its blackened walls exposed — a haunting memorial to the city’s resilience. This church was such a contrast to the typical over-the-top Baroque splendor of most churches here. It gave me chills.

Last summer Wally and I had the pleasure of visiting the garden of chef and philanthropist . Bayless opened Frontera Grill in 1987 forever changing the face of Mexican food in Chicago. The production garden supplies his three downtown restaurants (, topolochicago, ) with hoja santa leaves, micro greens, and other delectable veggies. Our tour was led by Rick himself who blew our minds after he insisted we try the lemony-sour edible flowers of a Bolivian Begonia. Take our advice and sign up for tours on before they’re gone!
