ATLANTIC CROSSING: AZORES TO SPAIN
Angra do Heroismo 🇵🇹 → A Coruña 🇪🇸 | 19.10—30.10 | 11 days

A two-stage Atlantic crossing from the historic port of Angra do Heroismo through Ponta Delgada to the ancient harbour of A Coruña. The route follows centuries-old trading paths between Portuguese island outposts and continental Europe.

Route Highlights:
- Angra do Heroismo, with UNESCO World Heritage fortifications, where Portuguese explorers once provisioned for voyages to the New World
- Ponta Delgada's modern marina facilities provide a final preparation point before the long Atlantic passage
- 950 nautical mile passage across the North Atlantic, following historic trading routes between the Azores and continental Europe
- October whale watching opportunities coinciding with migration patterns while autumn weather creates dynamic seascape conditions

This stage requires careful weather planning and understanding of Atlantic weather systems during autumn conditions. The route includes one extended ocean passage requiring watch systems and weather routing.

CENTRAL AZORES ISLAND HOPPING
Horta 🇵🇹 → Angra do Heroismo 🇵🇹 | 11.10—18.10 | 7 days

We explore the Central Azores group, starting from Horta on Faial. The route takes us to Pico for volcano climbing and wine tasting, then to São Jorge, and finally Graciosa with its green volcanic caldera before reaching Terceira.

Route Highlights:
- Horta Marina is the most famous yachting place in the Azores. Historically, here stopped most of the yachts (and, at times, even planes!) making the West-to-East Transatlantic
- Pico offers the highest mountain in the archipelago for climbing in suitable weather conditions. Local wineries and whale watching add to the volcanic landscape experience
- São Jorge provides one of the most comfortable marinas to explore this beautiful green island, with lighthouse on its northwest tip and hiking near waterfalls
- Graciosa, the smallest island of the central group, provides a feeling of remoteness, along with tasting fresh fish and walking inside the green enclosed caldera of the volcano

This stage is planned to be one of easiest in our Azores stages, mostly focusing on land: hiking and sightseeing. Passages last up to 10 hours with one potential night sailing. All routes cross open ocean waters with no enclosed bays or protected sailing areas.

Route: Horta → Lajes do Pico → Velas → Graciosa → Angra do Heroismo

From Tranquil Fjords to the Open Ocean: The Many Faces of Sailing

Sailing is never just one experience—it transforms completely based on where you are. At Xploration, we navigate through five distinct sailing environments, each with its own character:

Sheltered Fjords: 20-40 nautical miles per day surrounded by towering cliffs and calm waters. Perfect for explorers who appreciate changing landscapes and shore excursions.
🌊–🌊🌊

Coastal Navigation: 30-70 miles daily with tides and currents shaping your journey. Early starts to catch favorable conditions, with navigation requiring attention to shoals and maritime traffic.
🌊🌊–🌊🌊🌊

Island Archipelagos: From the Lofotens to the Azores, these routes balance protected channels with open crossings. Each island brings its own culture and natural wonders.
🌊🌊–🌊🌊🌊

Offshore Passages: Life reorganizes around watch rotations (typically 3 hours on, 9 hours off). The rhythm of the ocean takes over as you experience complete self-sufficiency.
🌊🌊🌊🌊–🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊

Polar Sailing: From Svalbard to Greenland, we navigate among icebergs and glaciers under the midnight sun. Cold temperatures and remoteness demand special preparation.
🌊🌊🌊–🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊

Our "buff" scale helps match your experience level with the right adventure. Discover what a typical day looks like in each environment on our blog (link in bio).

Galician Watercolour Workshop

Stage 7.2 has drawn to a close, blending art and sailing in perfect harmony. For seven days, our crew navigated the sheltered waters of Galician rias while learning watercolour techniques under the guidance of

The rhythm of our journey was set by morning sailing sessions and afternoon painting practice — sometimes aboard Perola, sometimes on secluded beaches or in centuries-old harbours. As the yacht moved through crystal waters, each participant developed their own approach to capturing the maritime world.

From the protected paradise of the Cies Islands to the stone hórreos of Combarro, each location offered new perspectives for our artists. Short passages between anchorages meant plenty of time for both sailing instruction and artistic exploration.
From the protected paradise of Cies Islands to the stone hórreos of Combarro, each location offered new perspectives for our artists. Short passages between anchorages meant plenty of time for both sailing instruction and artistic exploration.

The real magic? Watching how differently each person interpreted the same seascape. Some focused on light playing across waves, others on the architectural details of fishing villages, and a few challenged themselves to capture our schooner in motion.

This wasn't just another sailing trip or art class — it was something completely different. A journey where every observation becomes more meaningful when translated through brush and paper.

Captain Mitya in the Arctic

Thinking about high-latitude sailing? Meet the person who'll navigate you through the ice fields and polar waters in Season 9.

Mitya — CEO, co-founder of Xploration, and driving force behind our expeditions—will take the helm for our journeys to Lofoten, Polar Norway, Svalbard, Iceland, and Greenland. With a background in mathematics and technology, his navigation approach combines precision with adaptability.

This isn't his first Arctic rodeo – having already guided Perola do Mar through Scoresby Sund's icebergs and accumulated over 20,000 nautical miles across diverse waters. With formal RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certification and experience skippering 1000+ mile ocean passages in harsh conditions, Mitya has navigated everything from Arctic ice fields to wild tropical archipelagos.

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." This isn't just a quote Mitya likes – the philosophy drives our northern expeditions.

Who Sails With Us?

Our crews aren't just passengers waiting to be served. They're active participants in each journey – raising sails at dawn when most are still asleep, standing watch under starry skies, and helping navigate through uncharted waters.

They've already traveled extensively but haven't stopped exploring. They seek more than staged tourist experiences or luxury for its own sake. Instead, they value authenticity, moments of genuine connection, and opportunities to see themselves and the world with new eyes.

Some are seasoned sailors looking to test their skills in challenging waters. Others have never set foot on a yacht but bring their curiosity and openness. Many work in tech, science, or creative fields, stepping away from screens to reconnect with something tangible and real.

What unites them? A willingness to embrace the unforeseen, find joy in each twist of the route regardless of circumstances, and share in challenges and discoveries.

Before each journey, we personally speak with every crew member. This video call helps ensure everyone on board is a great fit, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and connections flourish naturally.

Our most memorable journeys happen when the crew becomes a community of like minds – different hearts but with a shared vision. That's how we find new eyes and make each voyage of true discovery.

SEASON 9: ARCTIC SAILING | SUMMER 2025

Into the far north: Norway to Iceland and Greenland

Summer 2025 marks Xploration's most ambitious Arctic season to date. Perola do Mar will navigate from the dramatic Lofoten archipelago all the way to Greenland's southern fjords, through some of the most remote and pristine waters of the far north.

Lofoten & Polar Norway (June - July)
Our Arctic expedition begins amidst the towering peaks and sheltered bays of Norway's Lofoten Islands. From there, we follow Norway's rugged coastline northward to Tromsø, the "Gateway to the Arctic."

Svalbard & The High Arctic (July)
Three weeks exploring the glaciated wilderness of Svalbard, where massive ice fronts calve directly into the sea, historic trappers' cabins stand testament to polar exploration, and Arctic wildlife from polar bears to walrus inhabit the landscape.

Epic Arctic Crossing (July 28 - August 14)
The season's cornerstone – a 1,500-nautical-mile, 17-day passage from Svalbard to Iceland via Jan Mayen Island and East Greenland's magnificent Scoresby Sound. This challenging route traverses four distinct Arctic regions through waters where sea ice meets open ocean, demanding careful navigation and constant vigilance.

Greenland's East Coast & Southern Fjords
After this crossing, we continue southward along Greenland's east coast, navigating through ice-filled waters between isolated settlements and active glaciers, before passing through the narrow Prince Christian Sound to reach South Greenland with its Norse ruins and modern Inuit communities.

Special Photography Expedition (August 29 - September 9) Concluding our Arctic season, we offer a unique photography-focused expedition along Greenland's southeastern coast with Icelandic photographer Gaui H., a DJI Nordic ambassador. This 11-day journey from Kulusuk to Narsarsuaq includes daily photography workshops, drone operation in Arctic conditions, and special focus on capturing ice landscapes and aurora borealis during the returning darkness.
