How to say “Hi / Hello” in Chinese + a quick breakdown of “hello”!

1) Hi / Hello (neutral, for everyone)
➡️ 你好 — Nǐ hǎo

Breakdown:
你 — nǐ = you
好 — hǎo = good / well
So literally: “you + good” → “hello!”

2) Hello (polite / respectful)
➡️ 您好 — Nín hǎo
您 — nín = you (polite)

💡 Quick tip:
If you’re not sure which one to use — choose 你好. It’s the most universal.

One of the most important Chinese characters — you’ll see it everywhere.
It’s simple because it originally came from a drawing of a human, and it still looks like a small silhouette.

✅ Meaning: person / people
✅ Level: HSK1
✅ Fun fact: 人 is one of the most frequent characters and appears in tons of everyday words.
