As I explored further, I discovered parts of the resort that felt almost abandoned. Closed areas, deteriorating buildings and a completely different side to the tropical paradise being sold to visitors.

For most people, a day at the beach is something they never have to think twice about. But for many wheelchair users, soft sand and the ocean can be some of the biggest barriers to enjoying the experience.

I travelled to Hamilton Island to see what happens when accessibility is built into the experience.

When most people think about a beach holiday, they picture soft sand, crystal clear water and the freedom to jump straight in. For many wheelchair users, that simply isn’t possible.

So I travelled to Hamilton Island to see whether one of Australia’s most iconic beaches could genuinely deliver an accessible experience.

From borrowing a beach wheelchair to rolling across the sand and into the ocean, this was more than just a swim. It was a reminder of how life changing thoughtful accessibility can be when tourism operators get it right.

If you’re planning a trip, travelling with someone who has a disability, or simply interested in what inclusive tourism can look like, this is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Can a wheelchair reach Whitehaven Beach by helicopter?

When most people see a helicopter, they think about the flight.

I was thinking about one thing... How do you even get into it?

From transferring out of my wheelchair to landing on one of Australia's most remote beaches, this turned into an adventure I'll never forget.
