Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park, spanning roughly 3,230 square kilometers in the southern safari circuit. Bordering Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) to the south, Mikumi forms part of a massive, interconnected ecosystem.

Highlights & Key Features

Mkata Floodplain: The heart of the park, often compared to the Serengeti for its wide-open, horizon-to-horizon savanna views. It offers the best wildlife viewing in the park.

Wildlife Density: Home to large herds of elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, and giraffes (specifically the Masai giraffe). Predators include lions—frequently seen lounging in trees or near waterholes—leopards, hyenas, and wild dogs.

Hippo Pools: Situated 5 km north of the main entrance gate, these permanent pools are prime spots for viewing hippos up close, alongside nesting waterbirds.

Birdwatching: Over 400 species of birds have been recorded, including the yellow-throated longclaw, lilac-breasted roller, bateleur eagle, and various migratory species during the wet season.
