Vultures are vital ecological “clean-up crews” that consume rotting-carrion. This dietary habit prevents the spread of deadly diseases like anthrax and rabies. Grouped into “New World” and “Old World” varieties, there are 23 distinct species globally

These scavenging raptors are the hyenas of the skies, playing a vital ecological clean-up role by disposing of decomposing carcasses. Broad wings allow Vultures to soar effortlessly for hours. Acute eyesight enables them to locate their quarry from miles away. And potent stomach acids help them deal with the most putrid carcass.

Of ten species that occur in Africa, the lappet-faced vulture (Torgos tracheliotos) and cape vulture (Gyps coprotheres) are the largest. Both have wingspans that may reach 2.9m. Below are five fascinating facts about vultures.

Interesting facts:
1. Vulture groups change names: A resting group of vultures is called a “committee” or “venue”, but when they are gathered around a carcass, the group is referred to as a “wake”. When flying, the group is called a “kettle”
2. They urinate on their own legs: Vultures lack sweat glands and use urination as a cooling mechanism. Because their urine is highly acidic, it also acts as an antiseptic, sterilizing their feet after walking through a carcass

3. They possess a superpower sense of smell: While Old World vultures rely solely on sight, New World vultures (like the Turkey Vulture) have a highly unusual, well-developed sense of smell. They can detect the scent of a dead animal from miles away.

4. Vultures can digest meat in any stage of decay, and withstand diseases that would kill any other creature.

5. A vulture can cram up to 1kg of carrion into its crop – a distensible sack, located in front of its esophagus. Vultures cannot depend upon finding food daily, so this supply works as a packed lunch. When disturbed, it will empty its crop for a quick take-off and escape.

When is the best time to climb Mt Kilimanjaro?

If you are interested in trekking Kilimanjaro in the best weather, the ideal times to hike are December/January/February and Mid-May, June through October. If your primary goal is to summit when it is less populated, you can choose a more remote path, or opt to summit during a less popular season. Mt.
