FMCSA Eases Another Regulatory Requirement for Drivers

The FMCSA has announced that commercial drivers are no longer required to keep a printed copy of their Electronic Logging Device (ELD) user manual inside the truck.

Since ELDs have been widely used for years and most systems already include digital manuals, the agency determined that the paper requirement no longer provides a meaningful safety benefit. Drivers and carriers can still keep a printed manual if they choose, but it is no longer mandatory.

While these may seem like small changes, they help reduce unnecessary paperwork and administrative burdens for drivers and carriers while maintaining compliance and safety standards.

At Southern Haulers, we stay up to date on industry regulations so our drivers can stay focused on what matters most—moving freight safely and efficiently.

A current rule that requires a printed ELD manual in a truck is being eliminated.

In the transportation industry, every day a container sits idle can have a ripple effect throughout the supply chain.

Container dwell time refers to the amount of time a shipping container remains at a port, rail terminal, or storage facility before moving to its next destination. The longer a container sits, the greater the risk of delays, congestion, and additional costs.

Reducing dwell time helps:

• Improve supply chain efficiency
• Increase equipment availability
• Reduce storage and detention costs
• Keep inventory moving to customers faster
• Minimize congestion at ports and terminals

At Southern Haulers, we recognize that moving freight efficiently is about more than transportation—it's about helping customers maintain supply chain continuity and keeping commerce moving.

Understanding Drayage: The First Link in the Supply Chain

When cargo arrives at a seaport, its journey is far from over. Before products can reach warehouses, distribution centers, or retail locations, they often require a critical transportation service known as drayage.

Drayage is the movement of shipping containers over short distances between ports, rail terminals, warehouses, and inland facilities. While these trips may be relatively short, they are essential to maintaining an efficient and reliable supply chain.

Key benefits of effective drayage operations include:

• Reduced port and terminal congestion
• Faster container turnaround times
• Improved inventory flow and distribution efficiency
• Lower supply chain delays and disruptions
• Enhanced visibility and control of freight movement

As cargo volumes continue to grow throughout the Southeast, efficient drayage services remain a vital component of keeping freight moving and businesses supplied.

At Southern Haulers, we understand the importance of timely container transportation and work every day to support customers with dependable service, experienced drivers, and a commitment to operational excellence.

A major topic in transportation right now is carrier selection and safety standards.

The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) is asking the FMCSA to create clearer federal guidelines that brokers and shippers can use when selecting motor carriers. The request comes after recent court decisions increased scrutiny on how carriers are chosen and evaluated.

For carriers, this highlights the growing importance of maintaining compliance, strong safety records, proper insurance coverage, and accurate operating authority information.

At Southern Haulers, safety remains a top priority. As regulations and industry standards continue to evolve, we're committed to operating safely, staying compliant, and providing reliable service for our customers.

The Transportation Intermediaries Association is asking FMCSA to take steps more clearly defining safe carriers.

The ARP Rail Yard plays a major role in moving freight throughout the Southeast. By transferring containers between rail and trucks, it helps businesses move products more efficiently while reducing congestion on the highways.

Rail yards like ARP are a critical part of the supply chain, allowing freight to travel long distances by rail before being delivered to its final destination by truck. This creates a faster, more efficient transportation network for manufacturers, retailers, and consumers alike.

At Southern Haulers, we're proud to help keep freight moving in and out of the ARP Rail Yard. Our drivers work every day to ensure containers are delivered safely, on time, and with the level of service our customers expect.

Behind every container is a team of drivers, dispatchers, and logistics professionals working together to keep America's supply chain moving.
