San Miguel De Allende, Mexico

We first visited San Miguel De Allende in 2017 and immediately fell in love with this beautiful town. Walking around the charming cobblestone streets and marvelling at the colourful buildings we could see why this town was getting so much attention. The Plaza Principal is pedestrianised for two blocks and here sits the pink stone 18th-century church, the Parroquia de San Miguel Archangel.

San Miguel is an old silver mining city originally known as San Miguel El Grande and was founded by the Franciscan order in 1542 after a monk named Juan de San Miguel. A few centuries later the town was the birthplace of Ignacio Allende who was a leader in the victorious Mexican War of Independence against Spain. He was honoured in 1826 when the town was renamed San Miguel De Allende. To this day he is celebrated as a national hero and Independence Day celebrations here have a historical importance as well as lots of fireworks!!

The city is a mix of Hispanic and Mesoamerican influences and you can see a baroque, neoclassical and neogothic mix in the city's buildings. In 1926 San Miguel was declared a national monument and the central historical district has strict building and restoration codes used to preserve its wealthy and historical past. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

San Miguel De Allende or SMA for short, has for the last four years consistently won World’s Best City awards. World’s Best City by Travel and Leisure Magazine in 2017 and 2018 and second best in 2019 and 2020. World’s Best Small City by Condé Nast Traveller in 2020.
