The perfect CarCamp setup for solar eclipse viewing. I really believe there are an infinite number of activities that these CarCamp kits can help you enjoy. CarCamp and road trips are obvious ones, here are some others:
• drive-in movies
• picnics
• date nights
• visiting family (I like having a quiet space I can retreat to)
• post-party bed
• mid-day naps at work
• mid-day naps at play
• sunset watching

CarCamp started out as a product for myself. I wanted to travel and road trip with my dog (a 90-pound Golden). Originally, I’d just thrown a mattress in the back of the Subaru, but a large dog requires space and a lot of food, and I require space and a lot of food, too! The time required to move everything (that I piled onto the mattress during the day) into the front seats at night for sleeping, wasn’t sustainable and made me feel vulnerable as I stood in random parking lots shifting things around after dark. So I knew I needed to solve the problem of storage.

The kit has evolved a great deal since the mattress on the floor, and since the version in this post with under-bed storage, but one thing was constant through the whole process: how much every version of the kit allowed me to travel and spend time with my dog before he passed away. If you’re wondering what you’ll remember when your pup is gone, it’s the moments of pause, like this, in the middle of your adventures together. This weekend, take a moment to just be outside with your puppers.

I (me, the lady on the left 🙋‍♀️) designed the CarCamp kit so that it folds up and can stay in the cargo space when it’s not in use. This is honestly one of my favorite features. When the kit is folded up, the drawers and drawer tops are still accessible and useable. This makes post-hike lunches so fun snd easy.

I’m a big fan of post-hike, roadside picnics, especially when you have the space to make something hot and delicious on a chilly day!

Cheers to all the picnics ahead of you!! 🍻

In 2020 I was still in the planning and development phase of the lightweight, moveable, and convertible CarCamp kits that I’m selling now. was about to drive across the country to photograph a Rocky Mountain wedding. To avoid staying in gross hotels and to minimize expose to the virus, she wanted to car camp.

The car camping set up I built for her (in a day, with just a jigsaw, chop saw and drill - don’t judge) was not moveable or lightweight, but it did help me make some discoveries that I’ve used to design the CarCamp kit, and it did help her have a safe and enjoyable trip across the country - and eat tacos along the road on the way.

Different folks car camp for different reasons and hearing more about the reasons helps me make a better product.

Why do you sleep, travel, camp, or live in your car?

Just repeating this to myself today as I power through the discomfort of putting myself and this lil business baby on the inter webs.

If you’re new here, CarCamp is my car-camping-conversion-kit invention to help folks sleep and travel in their vehicles more easily and safely. If you like having fun and being safe, you should check it out.

Also, if you’re new here, this is me. I like the woods and I’m weird.

2023 was a beautiful year for me in many ways. I took many adventures, including a two-month road trip through NewEngland and Canada with my partner and another through Arizona and Colorado. I cultivated new friendships, learned new skills, created excessively, and (ta da) started this new business. I believe what made those trips, discoveries and creations (and other life developments of last year) feel so special and authentic was the fact that I stepped away from sharing my experiences on social media. (Yes, this post is a bit oxymoronic, I know, but there's a point.)

At first, it was a little uncomfortable to exist in what felt a little like a suffocating vacuum. "How would I have fun if I couldn't prove to other people that I was having fun?" "How could I have a cool life if no one was validating my cool life with likes?"

I wrestled through that discomfort until existing in the moment for myself, for my partner, for my friends, and for my creativity, felt natural again – and I believe the new insight it unlocked is a bit of a super power. I am now creating and building this business around the fire that I have for traveling and car camping, not from a place of performance. Even if social media wasn't a factor in my marketing plan for CarCamp, I feel like I'd still make this thing work because I believe in what I'm doing, and at the end of the day I just want to bring this thing I love to other people who will love it. I'm out using my own CarCamp kit. I'm nerding out, "IRL" with other folks who feed off outdoor adventure. I'm creating a life around this passion and choosing to share snippets of that, instead of condensing and filtering my passions into a pixeled square. And, I think, that "chicken or egg" situation makes all the difference in how you come off to the world, on and offline.

The events of this week so far tell me that something in the universe can feel this burning passion I have, and I'm going to keep pushing that, with or without social media. I'm moving back towards marketing through personal connection, bringing my experience on traveling and life in the woods to people who care, and plan to organize group, CarCamp excursions to cultivate the in-person connection that really matters.

Stay tuned as I start planning the first caravan, CarCamp roadtrip, and give me a shout if you're interested in taking part. I know 2024 will be the year for more people to start traveling, camping and living in their cars!

We discovered that the CarCamp kits fit PERFECTLY in a '94 Volvo station wagon. I'm making some custom, insulated curtains and storage compartments to fully kit this thing out in 90's style. Imagine rolling up to a music festival or campground in this thing – you'd be the talk of the town!

More pictures to come when the curtains and storage cubbies are done!
