There's nothing like the feeling of discovering a small roadside snack stand while you're walking the Camino. We took a pit stop here while walking the Camino Portugues. An ice-cold Coke Zero (iykyk) and a jamon sandwich were just what we needed.

We love hearing Camino stories, and this one from Dan W. is one of the most inspiring we've ever heard. This is a must-read story.

Dan writes:

"My name is Dan, and I'd like to share some of the background to my camino.

5 years ago in the spring of 2019, my heart began to fail. I'd had an underlying condition for many years, but this was when it really started to affect my life. Within a matter of weeks, I went from an active young man going to the gym 5 times weekly to getting breathless walking to the end of my block.

My condition deteriorated over the next 2 years, to the point I was having regular heart attacks, and in April 2021 the decision was taken to move me into hospital to wait for a heart transplant. After 3 months, which culminated in 11 days on a life support machine (at which point I was days from death or permanent disability), a new heart finally came.

Although the first year after transplant was hard (I still struggled with walking because of damage to an artery in my thigh from being attached to the life support), the improvement since then is indescribable. I know nothing about the man whose heart I carry other than that he tragically lost his life at 27, but I swore that I'd live as full a life as possible to honour his sacrifice, and to take his heart to places his body may never have reached.

So here I am in Sarria, ready to fulfill a dream I never thought possible just a few years ago. I hope to meet many of you along The Way, and when I reach Santiago I will say a prayer to thank God for the miracle he gave to me and my family, and another to ask for peace for that young man and his family by whose grace I live. I hope I can make him proud.

Somewhere between their initial breakfast when they leave for the day and their lunch break, most pilgrims will stop mid-morning for what's unofficially known as "Second Breakfast."

It's a free-for-all fuel-up where you dine to your heart's content.

Coffee? Of course.

Pastries? Please!

Radler? Don't mind if I do.

It's an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the journey (after all, it's not all about walking) and it's one of our favorite Camino traditions. 😋
