In the Middle Ages, pilgrimage played a major role in Christian life—a way to bridge the physical distance between the believer and the divine.

Despite Christianity teaching that no place is holier than another, pilgrimages to sacred sites exploded in the early days of the faith. These journeys, embarked upon for various reasons such as fulfilling vows, seeking cures, or deepening faith, became a prominent aspect of Christian practice by the 4th century. Pilgrims of all social status participated, greatly influencing society & culture.

The earliest Christian pilgrims visited places associated with Jesus & the apostles, primarily in the Holy Land. Pilgrimage was endorsed by major theologians as a form of spiritual retreat.

In the Middle Ages, Rome and other sites like Santiago de Compostela & Canterbury became major pilgrimage destinations, driven by popularity of the relics of saints believed to provide a closer connection to God. Pilgrimage shaped not only religious practices but also the cultural and artistic landscape of medieval Europe, influencing literature, visual arts, and even non-religious travel with its spirit of sacred journeying.

🙀 I thought the petroleum jelly hack was crazy until I tried it.

Happy feet make for a happy Camino, so use these 3 techniques to avoid blisters.

(and veteran pilgrims, what other anti-blister tips do you have?)

8 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE CAMINO PORTUGUES...

A few years back, I walked the Camino Portugués coastal route with my husband and a good friend from college.

We walked in September so the weather was perfect.

Our little group passed through fishing villages, surf towns, and coastal forests.

Walking alongside the ocean each day, accompanied by the soundscape of the crashing waves was pure heaven.

While we didn’t see nearly as many pilgrims as the Camino Francés, we found much better dining options compared to the French Way.

If you’re considering the Camino Portugués coastal route, here are a few things to know...

→ Starting City: Porto, Portugal
→ Final City: Santiago de Compostela, Spain
→ Best time of year: May/September (to avoid the heat and crowds of summer)
→ Distance: 280 kilometers (174 miles).
→ How long to complete? 11-14 days.
→ Footpaths: cobblestone, sand, boardwalks, pavement
→ Accommodations: Hostels, private rooms, etc.
→ Popularity: 3rd most walked Camino path in 2025

Who’s walking the Camino Portugués in 2026/2027?

Buen Camino!

🍷 The early stages of the Camino Francés lead pilgrims through the vineyards of Spain's legendary La Rioja wine country.

Those walking a fall Camino (Sep/Oct) will find the vines heavy with fruit.

❓ DID YOU KNOW ❓

Spain is the third largest wine-producing nation in the world.

"Why?" I asked.

"Just to be funny!" he shouted.

This gent offered a good reminder: You have the right to walk your Camino in your own serious, meditative, slow, brisk, chatty, quiet, or ✨ SILLY ✨ way.

To my Camino vets...

❓ Did you ever encounter someone Camino-ing in their own unique way?

THE GRAND QUEST

Between Hollywood & social media, we've been conned...

Hollywood's taught us that big adventures are for the characters played by Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, and Angelina Jolie...

Social media's taught us that big adventures are for Jennifer from high school, Jim from church, and Sarah down the street.

SO...

We became content to watch—pale little ghosts, quietly consuming everyone else's big colorful story.

I lived most of my life this way.

But everything changed when I rediscovered my right to be the protagonist in my own story—the right to pursue my own grand quest.

A quest is simply an adventure with a purpose.

Last year more than half a million people traveled to Spain to experience a thousand-year-old quest known as the Camino de Santiago. Each of us—pilgrims from around the world—chose to step into our own stories. We chose to do something that felt a little scary. And it changed us.

Have you ever embarked on an adventure that changed your life?

In 2026 or 2027, I hope you'll embark on a Camino or begin chasing some other grand quest that will make your soul come alive.

Buen Camino. - B.T.
