🌊 Stay Safe by the Water This Summer ☀️
We were saddened to hear about the recent passing of actor Malcolm Jamal Warner. This news serves as a poignant reminder that as many of us head to beaches, lakes, and pools to beat the summer heat, water safety should always be a top priority. While details surrounding Mr. Warner's death are not yet clear, it underscores the vital importance of staying vigilant and following safety guidelines whenever you're near water.
Whether you're planning a swim or just relaxing by the water's edge – be it the vast ocean, a tranquil lake, or a refreshing pool – always remember to stay alert, adhere to safety rules, and never underestimate potential hazards.
Here’s a quick refresher on essential water safety do’s and don’ts:
✅ DO: Learn how to swim. Shockingly, over 40 million adults in the U.S. can't swim. Knowing how can be a life-saver! Tragically, about 4,500 people drown each year, with children and those over 65 being at higher risk. If you're not a confident swimmer, consider lessons! Organizations like the YMCA and Making Waves offer accessible programs.
❌ DON’T: Swim alone. Even if you're a strong swimmer or using a flotation device, having a buddy is crucial in case of an emergency. Medical episodes can happen to anyone, even in calm water. When at the ocean, a lake, or a public pool, always check for a lifeguard and follow their instructions.
✅ DO: Choose a bright bathing suit. It might seem like a small thing, but a bright color can significantly improve your visibility, especially in darker waters. If you find yourself in trouble, being easily spotted is essential for rescuers.
❌ DON’T: Picture drowning like it is in the movies. Drowning is often silent and can happen quickly. Instead of dramatic yelling, a person may be struggling to keep their mouth above water and unable to call for help. Stay observant!
✅ DO: Learn CPR. This skill can be life-saving in a water emergency. The American Red Cross and American Heart Association offer courses, including some online options.
❌ DON’T: Mix swimming and alcohol. Alcohol impairs judgment, coordination, and reaction time, making it difficult to assess your swimming abilities or potential water hazards. Be mindful even when boating or near a pool – accidental falls can happen.
✅ DO: Be aware of rip currents. These powerful, fast-moving channels of water can pull even strong swimmers away from the shore and account for around 100 deaths annually in the U.S. Before heading to the beach, check the rip current forecast from the National Weather Service and look for signs like calm gaps between waves or discolored water. If caught in one, stay calm, swim parallel to the shore until you're free, then head back to shore with the waves. If you see someone else struggling, call for help and offer a flotation device, but don't risk going in yourself.
❌ DON’T: Dive into water where you don't know the depth. Headfirst dives into unknown waters can lead to serious head and spinal cord injuries. Always enter feet first and only after checking the water's depth.
✅ DO: If you have a home pool, ensure it’s properly fenced. This helps prevent accidental falls into the water, ensuring everyone only enters when prepared – with a buddy and sober.
Let's all have a fun and safe summer by being mindful of water safety! Please share these tips with your friends and family.
