It's been a while since we posted we are calling on the City of Aurora, IL, Government and IPSD 204 to come to the table and make some substantial changes before one of our kids gets hurt or worse. Email that was sent:
with the City.
Members of the Board of Education and District Administration,
Since the start of the school year on August 17th, our community has witnessed an alarming, unprecedented surge in severe vehicle collisions along the primary corridors our students are expected to walk: Eola Road and Montgomery Road. Within a span of less than four weeks, our neighborhood corridors have turned into active hazard zones:
September 11 (6:00 PM): A two-car collision at Eola Road and Ogden Avenue.
September 12 (Early Morning): A 20-year-old individual was found deceased near Montgomery Road and Eola Road.
September 18 (5:00 AM): A catastrophic two-car crash at Eola Road and McCoy Drive that claimed the life of a 29-year-old man.
September 26 (Afternoon): A multi-vehicle crash at Long Grove Drive and Eola Road.
September 28 (5:00 PM): A rollover crash at that exact same intersection (Eola Road and McCoy Drive)—only ten days after a fatal impact.
October 2 (Morning): A rollover collision at Montgomery Road and Eola Road.
October 2 (Evening): A vehicle veered off Montgomery Road between Bar Harbour Road and Valayna Drive (directly across from Middlebury Park), crossed the multi-use path sidewalk, tore through two residential fences, and was stopped only by a homeowner’s shed.
October 4 (1:00 PM): A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle near these corridors, escaping fatalities by sheer luck.
All of these incidents sit squarely within the designated walking zones, crosswalk approaches, and multi-use paths serving Fischer Middle School, Waubonsie Valley High School, Gombert Elementary School, and Georgetown Elementary School.
Telling families that these routes are legally "walkable" defies basic reality. A sidewalk or multi-use path offers zero physical protection when vehicles are actively losing control, rolling over, and barreling into fences and pedestrian areas.
We urge the District to take immediate, proactive measures:
Initiate an Emergency Serious Safety Hazard Review: Coordinate with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) under Section 29-3 of the Illinois School Code to re-evaluate the certified walking corridors along Eola and Montgomery Roads. The volume, documented vehicle speeds, crash frequency, and crash severity warrant hazardous route classification.
Deploy Immediate Interim Busing: Provide temporary busing relief for impacted students along these high-risk arterial segments while formal infrastructure assessments and traffic mitigation are coordinated with the City.
Our previous pleas have gone unanswered, but student safety cannot wait for another catastrophic headline. We ask the board and administration to intervene before a student is seriously injured or killed.
Sincerely,
Concern Parents of 204 and Members of Aurora Strong Towns Together
