Southwest Airlines could be days away from rewriting its entire playbook.
Multiple industry insiders now believe the low-cost giant is preparing to launch transatlantic flights—starting with Iceland. Reykjavik is the rumored first stop, thanks to a deepening partnership with Icelandair that would open the door to nearly 40 European destinations. And the planes? Likely the 737 MAX 8s Southwest already flies.
Three U.S. cities are in the mix: Baltimore, Nashville, and Denver. The first two are almost certain fits. Denver might be a stretch due to altitude and distance, but insiders say Southwest is considering aircraft tweaks or even a new fleet type.
This isn’t just about Iceland. Baltimore, one of Southwest’s biggest hubs, could be a launchpad for London or Dublin if the MAX proves capable. And executives aren’t denying the buzz. “Anything within MAX range is appealing,” said international director Steven Swan last week.
For a carrier that’s long stayed domestic, this is seismic. And with codeshare agreements, a growing loyalty base, and a packed IATA schedule, Southwest may not just be testing the waters—it might be ready to dive in.
