Round 2 of storms last night (the squall line) brought some wind gusts over 60 mph. Most damage reports were for trees down. Fortunately, the lack of sunshine and storms/showers from earlier in the day robbed the atmosphere of instability that would've otherwise resulted in stronger storms and more widespread damage.

Round 1 of storms is done. Damage was in far west Balto/DC suburbs. Round 2 comes tonight as the cold front plows through.

Severe weather is on the way today. Straight line wind damage and tornadoes continue to be the primary threat. Be safe folks!

HOLY COW!!! Due to a front splitting the area today, there was a mind blowing 31 degree temperature difference between Annapolis and Charlottesville. And now, storms are about to roll in. That's quite a weather day.

After around an inch of snow today, mainly on grassy areas, light freezing rain will move into the Baltimore/DC area overnight. Expect slippery road conditions that could impact the Tuesday morning commute. However, precipitation will change to plain rain after sunrise Tuesday with melt-off as temperatures rise into the mid 30s by Noon.

High March sun angles make it difficult for snow to stick on roadways during the day when temperatures are just below freezing. Be careful as we get closer to sunset when some pavement and roadway may get slick.

*** WET SNOW OR SLIPPERY TODAY? READ ON ***
The question is, can a low level temperature at or just below freezing overcome early March sun angles for a minor snow accumulation and slippery conditions. Let’s dig in!

The US NAM has been pretty consistent on placement of the east-west snow band being lined up along and just south of Baltimore’s I-70 corridor and then across the northernmost part of Virginia. I expect temperatures to get just above freezing this morning and then drop to or just below freezing as light snow moves in this afternoon. With the higher early March sun angles (as opposed to lower sun angles mid winter), it’s hard to forecast much accumulation unless the snow is heavy. So, I’m sticking with my forecast of one inch or less for the Baltimore/DC area. HOWEVER, in bands of heavier snow, roads may get slushy or even snow covered and slippery.

Areas toward the Pennsylvania line will get little or no snow.

Below, I’ve posted the forecast snow amounts by the US NAM model showing mostly an inch or less as well as the NAM's low level temperature forecast for 4 pm.

I still expect a break in precipitation this evening with light sleet or snow restarting overnight. Precipitation will change to freezing rain, and then eventually plain rain as Tuesday morning. I’ve have more on that coming later today.

Stay tuned for updates!

*** BEDTIME UPDATE ON LIGHT SNOW FOR MONDAY ***
An early look at tonight's forecast models shows we don't have great agreement on where the narrow east-west band of light snow will setup Monday afternoon. The US NAM places the band along the I-70 corridor in Maryland while the US RRFS places it further south along (if not south of) Virginia's I-66 corridor. Suffice it to say, there is a chance of light snow primarily between the I-70 and I-66 corridors. Temperatures should be close to freezing so a light accumulation generally less than one inch is possible in the Baltimore/DC area where the snow falls. Given the narrow nature of the snow band, some areas will get little or no snow.

I expect there to be a break in precipitation by Monday evening. Light sleet or snow restarts overnight, changes to freezing rain, and then eventually plain rain as Tuesday morning wears on.

Stay tuned for updates!
