Hannah Moody of Bath, painted by Benjamin Greenleaf around 1817. She was the wife of Samuel Moody, early shipbuilder, and her son Minot has the oldest gravestone in the cemetery on Dummer Street (1794). Dr Burden gave me this reverse-glass painting today, which is one heck of a gift.

Here’s an awesome old photo taken from the courthouse. The large open area behind the Children’s Home was known as the South Common, and militias drilled there. It was also the site of the Old South Church, which burned during a riot. Thanks to Norman Kenny and Theresa Hanna.
