Green Mountain Ranch Historic Green Mountain Ranch
located just South of Buffalo Creek, CO. This historic 160-acre ranch that was homesteaded by our family in the 1890’s.

The ranch was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Buffalo Creek had Buffalo!! Yes Mountain Bison (Wood Bison) actually lived here. The last know one in the area was killed in about 1910 near Buffalo Creek. A big herd that lived in Lost Park was killed off in about 1890 to make room for cattle. In about 1930 you could still find Mountain Buffalo skulls at the lower end Lost Park.

While they were once thought to be extinct, a small herd was discovered in a remote area of Canada in the mid-1950s, leading to conservation efforts that have allowed the population to recover. They are currently listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.
