The Finnish Parliament is getting a book club! Finlandia prize winner Juha Hurme is the first author who will be featured, and the Finnish Book Publisher's Association has donated a copy of his winning book, Niemi (Headland), to every member of parliament. They're hoping to increase parliament's awareness of Finnish literature and dialogue between authors and politicians.

Yesterday in Finland was Runeberg Day, named after poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, which Finns celebrate by eating jam-topped mini Runeberg cakes, widely believed to have been created by Johan's wife, Frederika Charlotta Runeberg. Here's the thing: Frederika was an author in her own right! She was among the first Finns to write historical fiction and was known for her short stories.
