The Dead Artists Gallery

The Dead Artists Gallery 📍151 Main Street, Highlands, NC 28741
Come see a large selection of affordable decorative art dating back to the late 18th-20th century Welcome to our Gallery.

The Dead Artists Gallery was created to provide Interior Designers and Architects affordable fine art as decoration for local as well as international client projects. We are proud to offer one of the largest selections of mid-eighteenth through mid-twentieth century art in the Southeast. These are singular, one-off pieces since most of the artists are no longer painting (though all may not be dea

d!). Sizes, color palates and appropriate period framing have all been taken into consideration; the art ranges from whimsical to serious. Because some of our art is decorative for art’s sake, not all of our artists have been identified. Some have been described by our “pickers” without our authentication, but given out of interest. Please call for additional information. For the trade, frame sizes are the dimensions given; canvas size furnished on request. Shipping available to continental United States; pricing includes packing, shipping and insurance. To learn more about our gallery please visit us at: www.TheDeadArtistsGallery.com

Tom King (1925-2017) became familiar with the political/societal ills while serving in the
US Army Air Corps during World War II. After studying at Temple University with an emphasis on illustrative art, he received his degree in fine arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and then began a long career in commercial illustrations. Attaining unusual success with the unique art form of anthropomorphism which he used speaking out for animal rights, King would occasionally find solace in the French museum world of classic 19th-century French impressionism. This painting illustrates such a foray with his interpretation of Jean Frederick Bazılle's(1841-1870)
"Aiques- Mortes", sgned, dated and annotated on verso, we have kept it in the frame "as found", 18 x 25, $425.

(1893-1963). A Munich-based plein air artist of the first half of the 20th century, Brocker was known for his impressionistic, almost mystical country vistas. Presented in an earlier oil-gilt frame 22 x 26, $875. And... still qualifies for Moody!

"Moored". A surprising and pleasant discovery was made while researching this painting last week. We knew it was Turkish (From Constantinople through Florence) but what we didn't realize is that it was painted about 1970 by a female marine artist. Always interested in female artists, and this is the first first one we have owned from Turkey. A great deal of skill and experience on the artist board makes this a most pleasing acquisition. 18 Ă— 24 in original gold leaf frame with linen liner, $525.

Signed L/R "Edwardson "(Lawrence Christie, 1904-1995) and annotated on verso. After studying at the Hartford Art School with Gifford Beale, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art with Edward Dufner, and the New Britain Art League with Alfred Jones and S Nichols, Edwards immigrated south to establish his permanent residence in New Orleans. Maintaining a studio in Brooklyn as well, he became part of the avant-garde group of artists ushering in an era of brilliant color married to geometric interpretation of people, places and things. He exhibited at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art between 1930 and 1945, the New Haven Paint and Club in 1941 and the New Britain Institute in 1942 through 1946. Found in numerous private and museum collections, Edwardson is now taking his place in the modern American art field. 29 x 32 in carved French frame, $1250.

"L'Bacanalle." This delightful unsigned
French Barbizon depiction of a forest bacchanal is an apprentice copy/interpretation of "Morning, The Dance of the Nymphs" painted by John Baptist Camille Corot (1796-1875) in 1850. The museum apprentice technique for teaching aspiring young artists was first developed at the Louvre and afforded a quick and effective exposure to the great artists of the past who works were held in the museum. This technique was quickly adopted by other museums around the world and is still a preferred method in many countries today. The original painting remains in the Musee d'Orsay. At some point, the original Corot, or an apprentice interpretation, was used as an illustration for the production of Claude DeBussy's "Afternoon of a Faun" In Paris, 1929. 30 1/2 Ă— 40 3/4 in original bronzed deco frame circa 1920, $1650.
