Sometimes, looking at things like safer streets and transportation issues, it's interesting to get away from home. I just had the good fortune to spend 2 weeks in Southwest France - some in the big city of Toulouse and more in smaller towns and country villages. I was not cycling, except one day when I rented a bike for a few hours to ride the towpath along the Canal du Midi.
Various takeaways:
1. Delivery, including pretty heavy delivery by bike in Toulouse is a huge thing. Nearly all food delivery and a lot of heavier stuff is done by bike or trike, mostly with electric assist.
2. They have done some pretty decent bike infrastructure, but it's unneeded on most streets because the speed limit in most of the city is 30KPH (less than 19MPH
3. The city-wide bike share program, all of it electric assist is VERY heavily used.
4. Quite a lot of the younger cyclists are terrifyingly reckless, going at full speed through dense crowds of pedestrians.
5. The biggest takeaway of all: In 2 whole weeks, much of it in farm country I did not see ONE SINGLE PICK-UP TRUCK!!
