October 6, 2026 Refrigerated Freight Report 📦🍅🥕🚚

Here's where the market stands this week:

• October is generally a month of relative stability before the holiday season, outside of a few seasonal markets like Upstate New York, Idaho, and Washington.

• Illinois and Indiana are the country's top two pumpkin-producing states, and Chicago is a major shipping point for Halloween candy. Expect slightly tighter capacity in those regions as October goes on.

• Tender rejections ticked up slightly last week while overall load volume fell 2.35%, pointing to a market that remains competitive.

• Diesel is averaging $6.20 a gallon nationally, down from $6.38 last week. While last week's rate remains the second highest level on record and approximately $2.63 higher than this time last year, the week over week decline is a positive sign after several weeks of rising fuel costs.

• The rumored October 1 national driver strike didn't lead to a widespread shutdown. Some independent owner-operators and smaller carriers parked for the day to protest fuel costs, but there was no significant disruption to capacity nationwide.

December capacity gets committed in October, while carriers can still say yes. Whatever's left goes to the spot market, at spot-market prices.

September 29, 2026 Refrigerated Freight Report 📦🍅🥕🚚

Here's where the market stands heading into Q4:
- Q3 closed with re**er spot rates just under $4 a mile. That's up $0.21 from last month and 51% from this time last year.
- Refrigerated load tenders are up about 5% week over week and about 6% month over month
- PNW season is underway, with rates up 15-35% on certain lanes out of Washington and Idaho
- Northeast coverage at reasonable rates remains tough as re**er demand stays high
- The Texas Valley is still quiet, but its season starts soon. Rates into Texas remain high, while outbound stays relatively reasonable
- Diesel is averaging $6.44 a gallon nationally, down from $6.51 last week

The produce belt is moving south.

Apples are winding down in Washington and pumpkins are pouring out of the Midwest. In a few weeks, winter vegetable volume will start building in Florida, Texas, and Mexico.

Every one of those shifts redraws the re**er capacity map. Lanes that priced soft in August get competitive fast, and shippers who wait to lock capacity pay the education fee.

September 22, 2026 Refrigerated Freight Report 📦🍅🥕🚚

- Demand for refrigerated capacity increased nearly 10% week over week, putting additional pressure on an already tight and sensitive market.

- The national average diesel price crossed $6 per gallon for the first time, reaching $6.28 last week and approximately $6.51 as of September 21.

- Diesel prices are exceeding $8 per gallon in parts of California, driving up both inbound and outbound freight rates despite relatively healthy outbound produce volumes.

- Re**er spot rates remain significantly elevated compared to last year, with recent averages approximately 35% higher year over year.

- The Midwest and Great Lakes regions continue to experience some of the highest refrigerated outbound rates in the country, with rates in several markets running approximately 36% to 43% above last year.

- We are beginning to see seasonal shifts in capacity, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Apple, potato and onion harvests are driving additional demand across Washington, Idaho and Oregon, tightening available capacity as we head into October.

- There is also speculation about a coordinated driver strike on October 1 in protest of elevated fuel prices. At this point, these reports remain unconfirmed, and there is no verified indication of a widespread disruption.
