Begin at the Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance Light, a concrete beacon guarding the canal, before seeing Eagle Harbor’s red-brick 1871 tower and taking a boat trip to Copper Harbor Lighthouse. Mendota must be viewed across the canal from Bete Grise Road. Big Bay Point rises above a wooded bluff and now welcomes overnight visitors, while Marquette offers its bright red harbor light and the nearby Presque Isle Harbor Breakwater Light. Grand Island Harbor Rear Range stands beside M-28, but the weathered East Channel Lighthouse is best seen from the water. Au Sable requires a 1.5-mile walk from Hurricane River to its 86-foot 1874 tower. Remote Crisp Point waits beyond miles of gravel road on a wild beach. Finish at Whitefish Point, where the 1861 tower remains part of Lake Superior’s oldest operating light station beside the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state, and this drive pairs their history with rocky coves, forests, beaches, harbor towns, and endless blue water.
***The Mendota Lighthouse can only be viewed from across the Mendota Canal along Bete De Gris Road, while the Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse is visible only from the water.
