Here is a guide to help you think through how early you should start planning:
* Special Event? ASAP
* A popular destination? 11-12 months out
* Spring Break/Festive Trip? 10 - 11 months out
* Beach Vacations? 6 months out
* Europe? 6 - 9 months out
* Cruises? 1-2 years out
