Two and Fro

Two and Fro We’re Mark and Shauna and we are actuaries-turned-adventurers. We haven't been everywhere, but it's o So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor.

Mark Twain once said:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

We’re Mark and Shauna Trieb and we live in Dallas, Texas. We are actuaries-turned-adventurers and one of the truisms that guides us is: “Life is not a dress rehearsal.” So, we’re doing our best to see, mee

t, try, and inspire as many places, people, experiences and adventures, as we can during our one shot at life. In the summer of 2011, we embarked on our own journey of exploration (well, more earnestly, that is, than before). Here we share our adventures with you, our family and friends. When we’re not traveling (and sometimes when we are), we can be found with our family of four children, two grandchildren, parents, other family and friends. Or working on a project like our most recent one here in Texas with a fantastic organization – Purpose Built Communities. Thanks for stopping by! Mark and Shauna

Pearl of the South, Jewel of the South, The Red City - all just a few of the nicknames Marrakesh has acquired over the years. Marvelous Marrakesh Part Berber, part Arab and part African, Marrakesh is the heartbeat of Morocco where palaces and monuments of unrivaled refinement sit serenely alongside snake charmers and Gnaouan drums, pulsing constantly from Djemâa el Fna Square (pronounced Jema - the 'D' is silent) - one of the most exuberant marketplaces in the world. We left Fes and headed south to the Tafilalet region, famous for its savory dates and gorgeous scenery. Most spectacular of all are its night skies, which are full of stars because the desert is free of light pollution 👍👍 Rissani & Tafilalet Region Fez Le Berbere Palace Atlas Mountains To get to our destination, we first had to cross the Atlas Mountains, a mountain range in located in northwest Africa stretching around 2,500 kilometers (1,600 miles) through… [ 1,177 more word ]

"MARHABA!" is the traditional greeting used in Morocco to mean a warm "hello and welcome!" Morocco is rich in both history and culture, but navigating the country as a foreigner could have been challenging given the language barrier and the narrow, winding streets of the medinas. From the moment we landed at the Casablanca airport, until being escorted through immigration in the 'fast pass' lane in Marrakesh airport upon our departure, our group of 8 (welcome Renee and VerNeil, Faith and Garrett!) was so happy to have the excellent services of our guide, Samir, our driver Hassan, and other local guides and 'handlers'. The Egyptian Museum Our final insights into Ancient Egypt came on our tour of the Egyptian Museum. The museum covers 7,000 years of history including the largest collection of ancient Egyptian art in the world. Key features of the museum are the treasures of the boy-king Tutankhamun, including his gold mask, the solid gold sarcophagus that held his mummy and his beautiful throne. [ 1,451 more word ]

First: A few pics from our afternoon sail on the Nile yesterday afternoon. About to leave Esna for Edfu on our way to Aswan. Our views of the shore ranged from this high-end resort.... ....to these fishermen.... ....to these houses....and everything in between. Waiting our turn for the lock as we made our way up the Nile... ...And saw this rowboat coming our way. [ 1,081 more word ]

Just landing in Egypt had us giddy with anticipation. It was a destination that we always thought we 'probably should visit' ... now that we were here, we couldn't wait to see the storied antiquities we had read so much about. Egypt is known as "The Cradle of Civilization" and has one of the longest histories of any country. Human remains have been found from around 18,000 BC. [ 2,360 more words ]

In a word: humbling Next Stop: Petra, The Rose City Nicknamed the Rose City due to its color, Petra is one of the most easily recognizable destinations in the entire world. Located inside of a deep basin and accessible via a 3/4 of a mile-long gorge, the Rose City was not built but rather carved out of sandstone. Most of us recognize the iconic architecture of Petra with its buildings carved into stone rock walls. Remember Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? (Many other films were shot here including Aladdin, The Mummy Returns, Queen of the Desert, to name a few.) Aside from that, how much do we actually know about this ancient city? Or the country of Jordan? [ 1,329 more word ]

Ha ... number of countries visited that is (79 for Shauna). Since we were so close, we thought we'd hop over to Mozambique to check it out; well... after flying to Johannesburg, spending the night at the Joburg Airport Intercontinental Hotel (works great if you don't have time to go into town or enjoy a boutique hotel), and flying to Vilanculos the next day, that is.
