SHREVEPORT La. - Amtrak officials are looking to expand travel across several southern states, and with new data centers coming to the area they have to find ways to help people get around.

An expansion of the passenger rail along the Interstate 20 corridor will be one of the big pieces to move workers to and from new data centers that are planned across the region, including one under construction in Richland Parish and others expected in Caddo Parish and Bossier Parish.

The project is still in its early stages, but an 18-month study is expected to take a closer look at the proposal.

If approved, the new rail line would connect more than 14 million people across several states, giving travelers another option besides driving on the busy Interstate-20 corridor.

A study is back in progress to look at proposed rail service north of Dallas, between Plano and McKinney.

The Regional Transportation Council of the North Central Texas Council of Governments voted this week to approve resumption of the McKinney Passenger Rail Corridor Study.

The process of hiring consultants for the study was halted in November when some of the cities within the Dallas Area Rapid Transit network scheduled withdrawal votes from DART. After Plano came to a funding agreement with DART that also offers member cities more seats at the table, the study is back on.

The project consultant is expected to be hired by the NCTCOG Executive Board in May.
