Due to the lack of meaningful rainfall and continued high temperatures, the Town is initiating Stage 1: Water Awareness of its Emergency Water Demand Management Plan. The dry, hot conditions have led to high water use in Flower Mound and surrounding communities. The Upper Trinity Regional Water District has also initiated Stage 1 of its Drought Contingency Plan for its service area, which includes Flower Mound. While in Stage 1, Flower Mound residents should do the following:

💧 Do not water lawns and gardens between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

💧 Limit outdoor watering with automatic systems or hose-end sprinklers to no more than twice per week. For residents and businesses with street addresses ending in an even number, those two days should be Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday. For residents and businesses with street addresses ending in an odd number, those two days should be Saturday, Monday, or Wednesday.

💧 Reduce the use of water overall, including when refilling swimming pools, fountains, or ponds; washing and rinsing vehicles; watering new and first-year landscaping; and using faucets, hoses, or hydrants that allow water to continuously run.

The current water demand is approaching a level that could cause a reduced delivery capacity for all or part of the transmission system. With your help, we can avoid that reduction. For more tips on how you can conserve water in your home, visit https://www.flower-mound.com/621/Water-Conservation.

To help reduce the mosquito population, the Town of Flower Mound is giving away mosquito larvicide or "dunks" to residents who would like to begin a personal mosquito-control program. 🦟 Dunks are small tablets comprised of an environmentally-safe larvicide that specifically targets and eliminates mosquito larvae when placed in standing water for 30 to 45 days. Standing water can include bird baths, planter basins, stagnant pools, and water troughs.

Beginning today, May 2, the Town will give away two free dunks per household to residents who come to Town Hall (2121 Cross Timbers Rd.) during regular business hours. Residents who would like to receive the tablets must show proof of residency such as a utility bill or driver's license. Town Hall is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Town has a limited supply, and the program is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Mosquito dunks are also available to purchase at most local home, gardens, and hardware stores.

The Town is in the process of lowering the residential speed limit to 25 mph. Flower Mound Town Council voted on Nov. 15 to make this change after discussing safety concerns and at the recommendation of the Transportation Commission.

Many residential streets in town are currently 30 mph. Prior to this change, subdivisions could collect two-thirds of residents’ signatures to request their speed limits be lowered to 25 mph. Approximately 20 percent of Flower Mound residential streets are already at 25 mph or less because of those requests or because Town staff determined a lower speed limit was appropriate for a particular roadway.

Staff is now working to roll out the reduced speed limit signs on residential streets across town, starting on the northeast side and working west. The entire process is expected to take 18 months. We will provide updates on our website and social media channels when crews enter new neighborhoods and areas. The new 25 mph speed limit goes into effect on a street once the speed limit sign is posted.

Crews are currently working to change out the signs in Sign District 1 (see map below), and will work in order from district 1 to 7.

In determining to make this change, staff, the Transportation Commission, and Town Council looked at many safety factors, including speed versus the likelihood of injury or death. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study found that a pedestrian’s risk of death when a vehicle is going 20 mph is 5 percent, but it’s 40 percent at 30 mph.

A subdivision can now request that the speed limit be raised back to 30 mph with two-thirds support from its residents and final action by Town Council. To learn more about these changes, visit www.flower-mound.com/residentialspeed.
