Pickpockets Do Not Rob at Random. This Is How They Choose.

They often work in groups of three or more, especially around metro platforms, bus stops and crowded stations.

While you are waiting, they are watching.

They look at what you are doing, what you are carrying and where you keep your phone or wallet. When tourists check tickets, take out their phone, open a bag, pay for something or keep touching the same pocket, they are showing exactly where their valuables are.

The moment you arrive at a platform, do not only look for your train or bus. Scan the people around you too.

Be careful when you see a small group standing close together but not really talking, often positioned in a loose circle, with large bags, jackets over their arms or hands kept close to other people’s bags. They may be watching passengers more than they are waiting for transport.

Do not panic, but do not ignore it either.

Make eye contact. Move your bag to the front. Put your phone away. Keep your wallet inside a closed bag or secure front pocket, and do not keep checking where it is.

The moment people see that you are alert and that you have noticed what is happening around you, you become a much harder target.

They are looking for distraction. Do not give it to them.

One of the biggest travel mistakes Americans make isn’t packing too much…

It’s assuming our manners are the world’s manners.

Take burping after a meal. In the U.S., you’ll probably get a few awkward stares. But in parts of Asia and the Middle East, it has traditionally been viewed as a compliment to the cook—a way of saying, “That meal was incredible.” Even then, customs vary by country, region, and family, so it’s always smart to follow your host’s lead rather than assume one rule applies everywhere.

The same goes for tipping, greetings, personal space, and even how loudly you’re expected to eat your noodles.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is learning that there isn’t just one “right” way to do things. Every culture has traditions that make perfect sense once you understand the story behind them.

The best travelers aren’t the ones who know every rule before they arrive—they’re the ones who stay curious, observe the locals, and aren’t afraid to learn something new.

Well… this wasn’t exactly how I planned to start my Fourth of July trip. 😅

My cousin and I had driven up to Colorado Springs to spend the night so we could leave bright and early the next morning for what was supposed to be an amazing 11-day adventure.

Everything was packed. I was ready to go.

The only problem?

I was wearing my cute wedges, carrying what felt like a suitcase that weighed almost as much as I do (11 days of clothes seemed perfectly reasonable when I packed them 😂), and trying to make my way down a steep flight of stairs… all with a bum knee from an accident years ago.

Looking back, there were probably several opportunities for me to make a better life choice.

But hindsight is 20/20.

I made it almost all the way down before I missed the last three steps, went down in spectacular fashion, and broke my ankle.

Just like that, my Fourth of July vacation came to a screeching halt before I even made it out the front door.

Literally.

(No pun intended. 😅)

Instead of road trips, fireworks, and family time, my plans now include surgery, a knee scooter, and becoming way more familiar with orthopedic offices than I ever wanted to be.

If there’s a lesson here, it’s this: sometimes your biggest travel adventure happens before the trip even starts… and maybe don’t carry your entire wardrobe down steep stairs in wedges when one knee is already questionable.

I guess the Oklahoma stories will just have to wait a little longer.

Airport lounges are one of my favorite travel perks, but here’s the part nobody tells you:

Lounge access is not always as simple as flashing a fancy card and floating into free snacks like travel royalty.

Before you go, check these things:

1. Activate your membership before your trip. Some cards, like Venture X, require you to enroll in Priority Pass first. Do not discover this at the lounge desk while holding a boarding pass and a $9 airport coffee.
2. Guest rules change. Just because you can bring someone in does not mean they are free. Some lounge programs now charge guest fees, and those charges may show up later on your card.
3. Arrival access is usually not a thing. Many lounges are meant for departing flights or same-day connections, not “I just landed and want a snack.”
4. Some lounges only allow entry within a certain window before departure, often around 3 hours.
5. Not all lounges are created equal. Some feel like boutique hotels. Others feel like someone put hummus in a conference room and called it luxury.
6. Always check the app before you go. Hours, crowding rules, guest fees, location, and entry restrictions can vary by airport.

My personal rule? I use lounges when they actually make the travel day better: long layovers, early flights, work time, or when airport food prices are acting like they have resort fees.

Airport lounges are not just about feeling fancy. They can save money, lower stress, and turn airport waiting time into part of the trip instead of the part we all pretend we enjoy.

Everyone talks about Portland, but I think Oregon’s real magic lives two hours away in Astoria.

Perched where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, this little town somehow feels like a fishing village, a movie set, and a history book all at once. Colorful Victorian homes climb the hillsides, sea lions bark from the docks, and every corner feels like a scene waiting to happen.

It’s the kind of place where you spend the morning sipping coffee overlooking the river, the afternoon wandering historic streets, and the evening watching the fog roll in wondering if you accidentally stepped into a Nicholas Sparks novel.

And yes, if it looks familiar, it’s because movies like The Goonies were filmed here.

Some places make you want to check things off an itinerary.

Astoria makes you want to stay one more day.

When people think of Utah, they usually picture Zion or Bryce Canyon. But tucked away in the southwest corner of the state is St. George, a city surrounded by fiery red cliffs, endless sunshine, and landscapes that make you wonder if you somehow crossed onto another planet. It’s the kind of place where a quick weekend getaway suddenly turns into you browsing real estate listings and asking yourself if you could pull off desert life.

When most people think of Arizona, they picture cacti, red rocks, and endless desert. I certainly wasn’t expecting to find a colorful little town built into the mountains, filled with art galleries, historic buildings, and enough character to make me want to wander for hours. Bisbee feels like a place that accidentally stepped out of another era and decided to stay hidden from the rest of the world.

Some places surprise you. And then there are places that completely steal your heart.

Eureka Springs is one of those places.

Nestled in the Ozark Mountains, this little town feels like it belongs in another era. Winding streets, Victorian homes perched on hillsides, hidden staircases, quirky shops, and enough charm to make you slow down and actually look around for a while.

It’s the kind of place where you accidentally spend an extra hour wandering because every corner seems to have another beautiful building, cozy café, or tucked-away garden.

I love big cities and beach vacations, but sometimes the places that stay with you the longest are the ones you never expected. The ones that feel like a secret.

And honestly? Eureka Springs is the kind of place you almost don’t want to tell anyone about… because you want it to stay exactly the way it is.

If you’re looking for an underrated American destination that feels equal parts fairytale, mountain escape, and Hallmark movie set, put this one on your list.

If Las Vegas and a Colorado mountain town had a baby, it would be Black Hawk.

One minute you’re sitting in Denver traffic wondering why everyone in the city decided to leave the house at the exact same time as you. Forty-five minutes later, you’re winding through the mountains, surrounded by pine trees and views so pretty they deserve their own postcard.

Honestly, the drive alone is worth the trip.

Black Hawk somehow manages to pack all the flashing lights, casinos, and “maybe this next spin will change my life” energy of Vegas into one tiny mountain town. We didn’t exactly hit the jackpot, but we also didn’t have to walk six miles through a casino or pay $28 for a cocktail, so I’d still call that a win.

And can we talk about the prime rib? Because if I drove all the way up there and came home with nothing but a good meal and mountain views, I’d still consider the day a success.

Sometimes you don’t need a big vacation. You just need an easy escape, a scenic drive, a little bit of luck, and a reminder that one of Colorado’s best little getaways is sitting just 45 minutes outside of Denver.
