Out here as part of the AudioFlux 2024 cohort presenting a new 3-minute piece today at at VCU!
1) the cohort!
2) conference kickoff and slide showing that they pressed an AudioFlux best-of to vinyl 🤯 (daaaang that would be amazing to be pressed on vinyl, maybe someday 🤞)
3) notes from a talk on the physicality of sound by Ellen Horne (‘Sound is touch over distance’…Will be thinking on that line for awhile)

Grateful for another year here with all of you (and shout-out to Moms for preserving childhood cake decorations).
On my birthday, I like asking people for advice.
So, if you were my manager, what would have me do this year?
Life is confusing, please advise.

To prep for our interview with happiness researcher Ilona Suojanen, I thought about what little things make a day happy for me, and made this odd little checklist in slide 1, a five question quiz for myself to see if I've done some things I know make me feel good.

Laughing, eating, seeing birds, moving, eating with people...I was honestly surprised at how simple the list is. I know that being able to do even these simple things is a privilege (For example, I am safe at home and the news is full of people who are being forced to leave their homes).

Ilona also had me take photos of things that made me happy at a few moments throughout the day.

-I sit on my back porch some mornings and this flower blooms there, and sometimes a hummingbird visits it right in front of me, like I was...i dunno a weird Disney princess or something.

-Friends sitting on that same porch. Just sitting.

-A kid showing me a drawing

-A tiny drum machine behind my desk

We talked about how happiness is measured, when and how that works and when it's complicated, and whether we can be happy knowing those around us aren't.

I want to think more about all these things. I want to know what things you'd list today.

Hey y'all, launching a new mini-series collab with for her show 'Am I Normal.'
If you're not familiar with Mona's work, she's a dang genius Pulitzer Prize-winning illustrator/journalist/everything person whose show explores (and melts) the concept of 'normal' through data and storytelling.
Each episode in this mini-run of the show starts with Mona and I talking about a statistic that might surprise listeners. Then I (with the help of a bunch of talented / producers) call someone up around the world who has an interesting story or angle on that stat, based on their lived-experience. It's not a show that wraps up a trend from all angles, it's a show that lets me take a peek into the mind of just one person in the sea of data and hear their take on a statistic that their a part of: A Japanese parent who talks about kids running errands alone, a woman in Hong Kong on the ins and outs of living with one's parents as an adult, a happiness researcher in what miiiiiight be the happiest country, and more.
Please give it a listen, and let me know what you think.
BONUS SLIDE: I'm in Japan currently, and our oldest child enrolled in school for a week while we are here. That last emoji-masked photo is the neighborhood kids (and our kids) rounding the corner as they ran home from elementary school, unaccompanied by adults.

Launch day! 🎙Awhile ago, I posted a question about non-English words for emotions that were hard to translate, and y'all posted all kinds of fascinating discussion in the thread.
Well, I ended up interviewing some of you about those feeling words, and I'm excited to let you know that a bunch of those interviews ended up in Episode 1 of More Than a Feeling, a new podcast on the science and philosophy of emotions that I'm hosting for 10 Percent Happier.
S/o to for the photo and of course , , , , and all the other producers for kicking off a season that's about to be a strange and magical ride ✨
We got a magical soundtrack from and , too, listen in y’all! 🙏🏽
