Mama&Papa Beer

Mama&Papa Beer As home brewers (& lovers of good, small batch beers) we've decided to share our craft brewery visits

Just call us "Mama & Papa BEER!" As we've visited micro and craft breweries in our home region, and enjoyed many a brewery tour, we have found we are amidst a generally younger crowd. This has led us to feel more like the Mom & Dad of the craft beer-loving population. We've chosen to embrace that reality and use our "added years of life experience" to embark on a brewery hopping adventure! The Br

ewers' Association shows the number of craft breweries in the U.S. has more than doubled (to over 5,000!) in the past five years. We think it's about time to begin a pilgrimage, of sorts, to explore these tasting rooms and brewpubs across the fruited plains. These unique, eclectic, creative establishments can range from large (i.e. Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, Revolution Brewing in Chicago, 3 Floyds Brewing in Munster, IN) to those incredible little "mom&pop" micro breweries that dot many neighborhood landscapes. Living in Illinois, it is easiest to begin this adventure in the Midwest. We are looking forward to sharing our experiences and impressions with our internet-connected neighborhood of online friends, family, craft beer lovers and home brewers!

A lively stop in Elizabeth IL! Housed in a small 150-year-old former Presbyterian church on Highway 20, this microbrewery maintains an 8-beer tap list: All brewed on a 3-barrel system. Our flight of four included a Czech Pils, a Coffee Blonde, a Saison and a Porter —they were all solid pours!! (It wasn’t lost on us that a brewery named Highway 20 opened its doors in the year 2020!

Wow! Our 565th unique brewery visit was to Brewery in St. Donatus IA! Just 20 minutes south of Dubuque sits Iowa’s oldest barn, and in 2020 it was given a whole new life as one of the most unique taprooms in the state. In 2023 it became a true microbrewery and now (alongside its historical significance) craft beer lovers and history buffs alike can enjoy some well-crafted beer inside an almost-200-year-old stone barn!! We enjoyed beer flight of eight — really loved the Vanilla Porter, the Milk Stout and their Honey Lavender Wheat.

In small town Stevensville MI is …. WOW!! What a magnificent space! It has been, no doubt, a central gathering place since 2016. AND… they brew some nice beers. No flights here, but we enjoyed four half-pours of…. A Hefeweizen , a Helles, an IPA and a Coffee Blonde. They were all solid beers. The setting was so nice, we could have stayed another hour!

A fun, nautical stop ! We’re sure this place is packed on a summer day! They opened their doors in the quaint “Maritime District” of South Haven MI in 2017 and have at least a dozen of their craft brews “at the ready.” Our flight of five included a nice lager, an IPA, a cherry wheat, a brown ale and a farmhouse saison.

Arrived with just enough time to enjoy a flight of really nice beers and some small plates to share. This family-owned brewery’s roots are in dairy & cattle farming, but the second generation decided to expand their interests and opened this craft brewpub in 2018. Our flight of six included their house lager, a rye IPA, a Festbier, a NEIPA, a honey brown and a throw-back ale with”Brett notes.

Being a beer-loving couple, it is always enjoyable to visit a craft brewery that is the “love child” of a husband and wife team! can be added to that category of microbreweries! (Their “About” page on their website is worth a read!). Their name is a blend of the couple’s first names: Tanya & Patrick. The brewery opened in 2018 and moved to its downtown-Allegan location in 2021! Patrick began as a home brewer in 2008, and in true microbrewery style, all their beers are brewed on a three-barrel system. Our flight included a white coffee stout, a NEIPA, an American IPA and a sour — a good variety of some solid brews.

Our 557th unique brewery visit was at this amazing mom-n-pop microbrewery in Pullman MI! This one was extra-special, because they don’t have ANY standard taproom hours; we set up our visit through FB Messenger, and it was great! PapaBeer got a personal tour from Master Brewer Tim, who began home-brewing 30 years ago (!) and began this craft brewery adventure in 2020, when he and his wife purchased an old YMCA Camp lakefront property! We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to sample ALL of their on-tap craft beers. (Thank you, Tim and Lisa, for making time for us!) — Tim knows his stuff!

Another “conversion” — serves up its craft brews within the walls of a very small, very old, used-to-be-countryside church — nobody there could tell us how old the building is, but it rests on an old stone & mortar foundation. Three brothers began this venture making hard cider from the orchard on the family farm. In 2016 they opened Texas Corners Brewing with a tap list of craft beer, hard cider and their own wines. Our beerflight included a Wit, an IPA, a NEIPA, a hybrid farmhouse/Riesling Ale, a Kolsch and a Harvest Ale. We also tried a couple of their hard ciders. Lovely setting, nice variety of craft brews, and a real cozy, welcoming community vibe. Amen!

It’s been seven years since our first visit to Evil Czech Brewing — so “tasty” to be back! Enjoyed a great beerflight of five: Czech Pils, West Coast IPA, NewZealand Pils, vanilla Rye Porter and a Raspberry Wit. Mishawaka has quite a gem here.

WOW! Our Autumn leaf-peeping journey begins with a flight of beers and a tiny taste of gin and Sea of Monsters Brewing in Valparaiso! Oh. Em. Gee! Yes… All five of their beers were great - a pale ale, an amber, a Kolsch, a dry stout and an American IPA…. BUT: A few years ago, this once massive manufacturing “campus” was transformed into a GRAND kaleidoscope of gathering spaces that invite guests to enjoy food, drink, events and the company of friends. Come for the beer & spirits, stay for everything else.

Recently enjoyed a first visit to in Berwyn’s historic Depot District! A homey, old-timey taproom with a wood-fired pizza kitchen offers such a great community vibe. We had four really, REALLY good beers in our “flapjack flipper” beerflight paddle!! — an IPA, an Amber, a Wit and a Marzen; ALL outstanding. They’ve been serving up craft beers since 2013. BTW — LOVED the play on their town’s name emblazoned on T-shirt merch: “Beerwyn.”

Had a delicious time in DuQuoin IL! The name of this 10-year-old brewpub honors the century-old building it now inhabits — built in 1879 as the St. Nicholas Hotel!! Our flight included an orange Cream Ale, a Czech Pils, an American Lager and a Raspberry Wheat. Our pints with dinner: a pale ale and a blonde ale. This brewery has two other locations — one is a Mississippi River landmark building in Chester IL!! Loved the beer, the food, the history!
