Mama&Papa Beer

Mama&Papa Beer As home brewers (& lovers of good, small batch beers) we've decided to share our craft brewery visits

Just call us "Mama & Papa BEER!" As we've visited micro and craft breweries in our home region, and enjoyed many a brewery tour, we have found we are amidst a generally younger crowd. This has led us to feel more like the Mom & Dad of the craft beer-loving population. We've chosen to embrace that reality and use our "added years of life experience" to embark on a brewery hopping adventure! The Br

ewers' Association shows the number of craft breweries in the U.S. has more than doubled (to over 5,000!) in the past five years. We think it's about time to begin a pilgrimage, of sorts, to explore these tasting rooms and brewpubs across the fruited plains. These unique, eclectic, creative establishments can range from large (i.e. Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, Revolution Brewing in Chicago, 3 Floyds Brewing in Munster, IN) to those incredible little "mom&pop" micro breweries that dot many neighborhood landscapes. Living in Illinois, it is easiest to begin this adventure in the Midwest. We are looking forward to sharing our experiences and impressions with our internet-connected neighborhood of online friends, family, craft beer lovers and home brewers!

It’s always a unique (and fun) experience to belly up to the bar in a truly small town brewery. is in Cornell WI (pop 1500). This brewery and pizzeria has been in operation for 11 years and is named for the street on which the original owner/founder lived! On a Wednesday night, the place was hoppin’! Our flight included a blueberry wheat, a Kolsch, an IPA and a brown ale. Pretty solid beers — Cornell is lucky to have this brewery in town.

Beers… history… Theatre… AND — Our 600th unique brewery visit!! Make a trip to the Wisconsin town of Shawano for some nice beers, good food and an opportunity to see what a couple stubborn brothers have created!! is in an historic old theater building that was built in 1915 and operated (under several different owners) for almost a century. It sat vacant from 2013 until the Gilling Bros purchased it in 2016. After four years of renovation, Stubborn Brothers Brewery became a reality! Our beerflight included a couple IPAs, an apricot lager and a cherry wheat. Nice beers = creative brothers. It’s easy to see how being stubborn paid off!

ANOTHER long-standing Green Bay craft brewery!! opened in 1995 — first in an old cheese factory and soon after in a meat-packing plant. About a decade ago, they moved to a monster of a space along the quad outside Lambeau Field. (You can read a nice origin story here: http://hinterlandbeer.com/brewery/ ). Our flight of six included a couple IPAs, an Altbier, a pub ale, a cherry wheat and a pale ale. Good beer, good food, primo lactation and 30+ years of living the Hinterland spirit.

Passing through Green Bay, we had to stop at one of Wisconsin’s OG’s. began serving craft beer in 1996; creating a space in the old train station across the parking lot from their current location . They expanded their operations into the Rail Yard Innovation District more than a decade ago and eventually made it their singular destination, including the Sky Lounge! Our beerflight included an IPA, a Czech Pils, a French Pils and a light lager. All four beers were tasty, but that Czech Pils was so, SO good! They’ve got a glorious rooftop space. It would be a wonderful hangout for an evening.

First stop on our “WisconsinWednesday” brewery hop is . About eight years ago they settled into a shared space along the harbor in Sturgeon Bay. The location is awesome and so was the craft beer in our flight of four!! We sampled an IPA, a Pilsner, a West Coast IPA and their Cherry Ale (we’re in Door county ya’ know). Our flight was four-for-four, but their Pilsner was just perfection. Definitely a great gathering place (and family friendly with Sonny’s Italian Kitchen down the hallway).

Enjoyed a stop in Algoma WI. They began their brewing journey in 2013, transforming a garage into a taproom. After nine years, they built this beauty. Such a neighborhood community vibe, and some really good beers! They named their brewery for the town’s original (Native American?) name, from the 1800’s. Our beerflight included an IPA, a Helles, a Belgian Grisette and a raspberry lager. If time had permitted, we would have stayed for a couple pints!

Enjoyed a stop in Two Rivers WI. In 2022, this husband and wife team settled into an old bank building and named their brewery after their town’s nick name —Two Rivers is known as (literally) a cool city, given its spot along Lake Michigan. We think it’s cool that Two Rivers has a brewery that offers two kinds of brews: Beer & coffee! Our flight included a Czech dark lager, a sour, a Belgian ale and a shandy; the dark lager was our fav. The space is magnificent here… indoors, outdoors and in the old bank vault!!

Oh. My. Gosh!!!
If ever you’re traveling through Wisconsin, find your way to , on the outskirts of Manitowoc! Paul can brew beer!!! All five were solid — a session IPA, a Dbl IPA, a citrus lager, a Belgian Blonde and a sea salt & lime lager. We loved that Belgian Blonde so much, we filled our growler, AND we had to “take home” a four-pk of the double IPA! Take the time to enlarge the pics of the Petskull history and story — you’ll appreciate the picture of THE goat skull on the wall. They moved into this OLD building almost five years ago and have been a craft brewery for nearly ten. SO cool. CHEERS!!

Such a great space, and solid craft brews, in beautiful Port Washington WI. They began their brewing journey in 2017, sharing space with the American Legion in the last remaining building of a brewery that began in 1847!! (Read more —photo of historical marker included.) Just two years later, they built and opened their own gorgeous brewpub along the harbor (great beer-making equals expansion)! Our beerflight included an IPA, an amber lager, an English Porter and a pale ale. So good, we ordered up a couple pints to boot!
