Just upstream from Deer Gulch, one of the Upper Salmon's most important tributaries quietly joins the river—the Pahsimeroi River.

For thousands of years, this confluence has been a vital crossroads for fish and wildlife. Salmon and steelhead returning from the Pacific Ocean pass this point on their incredible journey to spawn, while the cool waters of the Pahsimeroi have provided important habitat for generations of native fish.

Before you launch your boat at Torrey's, you're standing at one of the best-known access points on the Upper Salmon River—but have you ever wondered where the name came from?
The Torrey's area is believed to be named after one of the early families who lived and ranched along this stretch of the Salmon River. Like many places in Custer County, the family name outlived the original homestead, becoming part of the landscape and a familiar landmark for generations of locals, anglers, and floaters. While the modern boat ramp serves thousands of visitors each year, the name "Torrey's" is a reminder of the families who helped shape the Upper Salmon Valley.
Today, Torrey's is the largest and most developed boat launch on the Upper Salmon, serving as the starting point for countless fishing trips and float adventures every season. Long before it became a favorite take-out for anglers and floaters, Kilpatrick was a working ranch on the banks of the Salmon River. Established during Idaho's ranching era in the late 1800s, the ranch was part of the transition from a mining economy to one built on cattle and hay production. Today, the BLM's Kilpatrick Day Use Area welcomes visitors from around the world, but the historic ranch reminds us that this stretch of river has supported Idaho families for generations. Whether you're ending your float or just soaking in the view, you're standing in a place where ranching history and Salmon River tradition meet.

Did You Know? The Challis Bridge Has Been a Gateway for Nearly 150 Years.

Long before today's bridge carried fishermen, floaters, and travelers across the Salmon River, there was an early toll bridge near the same location.
During the gold rush of the early 1880s, miners, freight wagons, and stagecoaches heading to the Bayhorse and Yankee Fork mining districts crossed the Salmon River here. According to local historical accounts, travelers paid a toll to cross, collected by a man named Sam Bergman.

Back then, crossing the Salmon River wasn't just a convenience—it was a necessity. The bridge connected booming mining camps with the growing town of Challis and quickly became one of the most important river crossings in central Idaho.

Today, thousands of people cross the Challis Bridge every year without giving it much thought. Whether you're headed fishing, floating the Salmon, or simply enjoying the beautiful scenery, you're following in the tracks of miners, ranchers, freight teams, and pioneers who made this crossing nearly a century and a half ago.

Prior to permanent bridges, many Salmon River crossings were accomplished by ferry, cable crossings, or seasonal fords. During spring runoff these crossings could become impassable. As ranching expanded in the late 1800s and early 1900s, permanent bridges became essential for moving livestock, hay, mail, and supplies between river bottoms and the town of Challis.
