Lady Ross Turaco enjoying his fruit mix. We use apples, pears, bananas, grapes, blueberries, shredded carrots, peas, corn, and seasonal fruits in our mix. Besides the daily mixed fruit, all our softbills get dry softbill pellets (Mazuri brand) available 24/7. Some of the turacos eat mealworms during breeding season, although they are not needed to successfully raise chicks. Mealworms can help trigger breeding behavior in turacos.

Update: Well, unfortunately the Blue Nape Mousebird clutch I posted about earlier was not successful. One egg vanished, and the other was dead in the shell. Hopefully they will nest again soon.

I did rescue an abandoned Silver Beak Tanager egg last week though, and the chick is now on day four. Handfeeding passerines is so stressful for me! It is always seems a crap-shoot as to whether or not it survives.

Blue Nape Mousebird sitting very tightly on two eggs due to hatch tomorrow. Hoping, hoping for chicks! All mousebird species need to sit tightly on their nests during incubation and first days from hatch. The less a mousebird leaves the nest the greater chance of hatching. Last year, they laid only one clutch, didn't sit tightly, and eggs were clear.

Second fledgling of the season came out today - a White Back Mousebird. His other siblings are still in the nestbox and will be out soon.

Mousebirds incubate their clutch as the eggs are laid, which is one a day, so chicks in a clutch are 1-4 days apart in age. Being that chicks grow so quickly, these 1-4 days can mean a lot of difference in size. When mousebirds fledge, they are active and climb, but can't fly for a couple of days. They fall like a stone if they take a misstep or get scared, and injuries can occur. They also chill easily and must stay dry.

I included a pic of what a day old White Back Mousebird looks like so you can compare to the fledged chicks.

First fledgling of the season - a Silver Beak Tanager chick. That's him sitting on the top of a nestbox and then toward the middle of the tree in the video. Parents are taking very good care of him. (Sorry for the poor pics. My camera is terrible, and I can't zoom in much.)

Raising birds in outside aviaries in the Pacific Northwest poses several challenges, weather being the biggest. This chick fledged yesterday during a cool, dark, windy, rainy storm. It is always a worry as to whether or not the chicks will be smart enough to stay under the covered aviary part until they are stronger.
