Review of Cornell & Diehl Jolly Old St. Nicholas
The packaging on this to***co is beautiful. It’s a standard Cornell & Diehl tin, but it is adorned with cozy Christmas artwork and lettering that harkens back to the age of Christmas past. Upon opening the tin, you are instantly greeted with a gorgeous array of to***cos, wonderfully blended together. Vibrant golden leaf catches your attention, but the black strips provide the depth. Visually, this is an incredibly pleasing to***co. You also get a nice aroma as soon as you open the tin. The orange liqueur stands prominent from the beginning, and remains the initial note when giving a dry draw. The moisture level on this to***co seems to be good, but may prove to be slightly too moist. Packing was not a problem at all.
This to***co had no problem lighting. The first few puffs, you are greeted with a warm citrus flavor and aroma due to the liqueur topping. That flavor soon mellows out, with the black Cavendish quickly taking the driver’s seat. The room note is a smooth pleasing aroma of rich sweetness and a hint of citrus. This is not an overwhelming to***co, so it complements a room well. There is very little bite to this to***co, and the aftertaste is a pleasant sweetness. Since I am not a big Cavendish fan, it comes as a shock to me how much I am enjoying this smoke.
My fear that this to***co might prove to be too moist was unfounded. This to***co continues to smoke incredibly well, not requiring a re-light. The sweetness of this to***co is counterbalanced well with the bright Virginia, which provides enough of a kick to keep me wanting more. The hint of Perique is beginning to rear its head, providing a nice complexity to this blend. The smoke is rich and billowing, providing an great experience.
While I am trying not to compare this blend with last year’s, it is hard not to. The only true comparison I can make is that this blend is yet another prime example of the blending mastery of Cornell & Diehl. The depth and complexity of this smoke, combined with the subtle sweetness that lingers on your tongue, makes this an incredible experience. As someone who does not tend to smoke aromatics, this blend has just enough richness to captivate even the most ardent English smoker. Pair this with a glass of Scotch and sit by the fireside to make the experience complete.
