On Thursday, I started watching Season 5 of Outer Banks (my guilty pleasure 🤪), and I was shocked when I realized the setting for the first few episodes was… Dubrovnik!

Since we visited Dubrovnik this summer, I was pretty excited to see how my experience compared to John B’s. 😂

The show actually did a great job showing the walled city, the narrow streets, and those steep steps! You can pay about 40 Euros to walk along the top of the wall surrounding the city, but we decided to explore inside the walls instead.

And I’m glad we did! The city was filled with the coolest little art and souvenir shops, beautiful cafés, and so many narrow streets to wander through. I didn't see any blue crowns while we were there, but maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough. 😆 We also went inside the beautiful church in the middle of the square. Just a heads-up if you visit, they require your shoulders to be covered, but they do have scarves you can borrow if you're underdressed.

One thing the show definitely exaggerated was the streets. They are very narrow, so driving motorcycles three-wide through them might be a challenge. 😂

And if you suddenly feel the urge to go cliff diving, good news: there's no need to jump a motorcycle over the city wall. There’s actually a bar where you can cliff dive right into the sea! And yes, the water really was just as clear and beautiful as it looked on the show.

Dubrovnik is definitely worth a visit… although I probably wouldn't recommend going there specifically to hunt for treasure. 😉

Do you remember the story about our cancelled flight, two hours trying to find a hotel, and ending up in a five star hotel we definitely couldn't afford because it was the only room available? Well, we finally got it paid for, but not by who we thought.

Swiss Air gave us a little over half - after originally denying our claim.

But our travel insurance paid the rest. And they didn't argue about it, try to deny it, or ignore it. I filled out some forms, uploaded some docs, and in less than two weeks, the money was in our account.

You can skip the extra skirt purchase, the cute shoes, and even the neck pillow.

But don't skip the travel insurance.

10 haunted houses.
Sinister scare zones.
Live entertainment.
And plenty of moments when you question why you willingly walked into that house. 😂

Halloween Horror Nights 2026 returns to Universal Orlando on select nights August 28–November 1 for its 35th year. And this year includes a Stranger Things House!

If you've never been, here's my advice: don't just buy a ticket and show up. If you want to visit all ten haunted houses, you need a plan:

- Buy tickets to to Universal Studios and enjoy the park the day of HHN so that you can start going into the houses up to two hours early!

- Buy fast passes if you want to get through all ten houses in one night.

- Figure out which houses are the slowest, which are the most popular, and which get the longest lines.  Use this info to strategically plan your route.

My family has been to HHN a few times.  My husband and my children LOVE it.  I can't even watch a scary movie, so while they walk through all the scary things, I spend the evening riding all the rides, which are pretty much walk on since most people go for the screams.

Want to know if Halloween Horror Nights is right for you—or how I'd plan a Universal trip around it? Send me a message! 🎃

So today I was finally able to see the movie The Odyssey, and I thought it was a great movie. However, I taught the text of the Odyssey and watched the original movie for about 20 years when I was teaching 9th grade English, and although the story lines were similar, I thought the focus of this movie was much more on the humanity of what these men were experiencing, rather than just focusing on Odysseus as this great hero with hubris.

For example, there's a scene where the men are hiding inside the Trojan Horse, and one of the soldiers says that they're literally sitting in human waste. It's gross, but it pointed out that these men were uncomfortable, exhausted, and scared, not just winning warriors.

There were a few other things like that. At one point, Odysseus says that they are going to Troy because Agamemnon wants to break through Troy for trade routes. The original text says the war started over Helen, “The face that launched a thousand ships.” I thought the new movie’s version feels more realistic to what humans actually do. We want a resource, we have power to take it, so we ransack whatever is in the way to get it.

And without giving anything away, one of the final lines really stuck with me. Odysseus says, “The dawn will break on the darkening world… and once again our mistakes will be forgotten." It’s so true. Humanity forgets the lessons it should have learned from the past.

This movie was darker, less fantastical, and more focused on the human condition.

Also, this summer, while visiting Corfu, Greece I got to see Odysseus’s ship (sort of). Corfu is traditionally believed to be the home of the Phaeacians who finally helped Odysseus get home.

And right off the main beach in Corfu is this really strangely shaped island (see pic!)  that, according to legend, is actually Odysseus' ship. The legend says that Poseidon turned the ship to stone after the Phaeacians helped him.

It was just really neat to see my teaching experiences and my travel experiences collide. Sometimes the things you've spent years reading about or teaching suddenly become places you can actually stand.

Have you seen the movie? What were your thoughts?
