Yesterday, FRFD responded to a mutual aid request to assist Dakota Fire Protection District with a structure fire.

Upon arrival, Dakota Fire crews had the bulk of the fire knocked down and successfully saved two classic cars from being lost.

FRFD remained on scene for a short time to assist if needed before Dakota Fire struck out the box alarm.

Great job Dakota Fire!

Actual series of events today:
• Beautiful weather ☀️
• Lunch time 🍔
• Dumpster fire in the middle of the road 🗑️🔥

The only thing that would have been more iconic would’ve been a dumpster fire on a Monday morning.

Late this morning, FRFD responded to a call after a driver noticed the dumpster they were hauling was on fire and dropped it in the roadway outside of Rt 20 Bar & Grill before it could spread to the truck.

Crews quickly got it extinguished while cracking a few “talk about a dumpster fire” jokes along the way. Thankfully no one was injured, and the damage was contained to the dumpster.

Thank you to Rt 20 Bar & Grill for sharing footage of the fire before crews arrived!

Happy Friday, happy early Mother's Day, and stay safe everyone!

On Friday, April 17th, 2026, the tones dropped for the call no one ever wants to hear:
“All departments and all units in the county are due to respond.”

For a moment, your heart races and your mind runs wild. Then training takes over.
The drive to Lena felt like an eternity. When we arrived, it was worse than we could have imagined. An EF2 tornado had torn through the heart of town, leaving devastation in its path.

But in the middle of that destruction, something powerful stood out: community.
Fire departments from across the county came together, working side by side on rescue efforts, cleanup, and welfare checks. At the same time, the residents of Lena were already there for each other, helping, supporting, and consoling their neighbors without hesitation.

In the face of tragedy, Lena showed exactly what strength and resilience look like. On that day, Lena was a bright spot in a dark storm.

FRFD sends our thoughts and support to everyone impacted.

Earlier today, Freeport Rural Fire Department responded to a report of an end loader on fire in a field.

Upon arrival, crews found a fully engulfed telehandler that had also ignited a small grass fire. Firefighters acted quickly to contain and extinguish both fires before they could spread further.

While the fire was brought under control without incident, the equipment is believed to be a total loss.

Yesterday, FRFD had the opportunity to host Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) for a Liquified Petroleum Gas (Propane) Fire Fighting training.

This was one of those hands on trainings that truly sticks with you. From controlling active propane fires to understanding the behavior of pressurized fuel systems, our members were able to gain real world experience in a controlled environment, something you simply can’t replicate in a classroom.

Trainings like this not only build confidence, but also ensure that when the time comes, we are ready to respond safely and effectively.

Thank you to IFSI for bringing this valuable training to our department and helping our firefighters sharpen their skills.

We would also like to thank all of the local departments who joined the training.

Lastly, thank you Stephenson Service Company for providing the fuel to the fire!

Earlier this evening, Freeport Rural Fire Department conducted two controlled grass burns, one off Forrest Road and another off Shepard Drive.

Controlled burns are an important tool for landowners to manage vegetation, reduce fire risk, and maintain healthy land. They also give our firefighters the opportunity to train in real-world conditions, sharpening skills and techniques in a safe, controlled environment.

Training like this helps ensure we’re ready when it matters most.

If you’ve ever thought about giving back to your community, now is a great time to get involved. FRFD is currently accepting applications and welcomes members from both inside and outside of Freeport.

Join the team. Make a difference.

🚒 FRFD Responds to Vehicle Fire
Earlier today, Freeport Rural Fire Department responded to Mowery Auto Parts for a reported vehicle fire.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed a working vehicle fire and immediately went to work. Firefighters quickly deployed a hose line and began extinguishment efforts while additional tankers were staged nearby in case the situation escalated.

Thanks to the quick actions of the responding crews, the fire was quickly brought under control and contained to the single vehicle.

Situations like these are exactly what our firefighters train for. If you’ve ever thought about serving your community and being part of a great team, FRFD is looking for volunteers.

This is what we train for.

At approximately 7:21 AM this morning, Freeport Fire Department requested mutual aid from Freeport Rural Fire Department for a fully involved structure fire.

FRFD was dispatched to assist with water operations and responded with one engine and three tankers. Crews quickly set up a portable water tank and began pumping water to the scene to support suppression efforts.

Shortly after establishing a sustained water supply, FRFD requested additional mutual aid tankers from the Cedarville Fire Protection District and Dakota Fire Protection District to ensure continuous operations.

This incident highlights the importance of training, preparedness, and strong mutual aid partnerships, especially during extreme winter conditions. We’re proud to work alongside our neighboring departments to protect our communities.

In addition to our monthly business meetings, weekly station, truck, and equipment checks, FRFD also conducts monthly drills and training at each of our three stations. Typically, each station trains on its own night, but tonight all three stations came together for a hands-on drill focused on air management.

Our firefighters participated in a game of dodgeball while wearing full turnout gear and air packs to demonstrate how quickly or slowly air can be consumed depending on pace and breathing. After the first game, it became clear just how fast air can be used when pushing hard without paying attention to breathing. In the following rounds, firefighters adjusted their pace to conserve both energy and air.

Training doesn’t always have to be serious to be effective and sometimes it can be fun too. If you’ve ever thought about joining the team, let us know! You get cool gear and might even get to play dodgeball once in a while.

Gameplay footage at the end!
