The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced four new battery electric buses started service as shuttles for the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC) on Monday, Dec. 15.
Transitioning to lower-emission fleets is a key step toward reducing our carbon footprint and building a more sustainable transportation system for future generations.

Hawaii DOT and its food and beverage concessionaire partner HMSHost celebrated the grand opening Waialua Bar & Cafe in Terminal 1 of the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).
Waialua Bar & Cafe is the first of several new dining options to come that will transform the passenger experience. The innovative menu will offer residents familiar local food and drink choices and provide visitors with authentic flavors of Hawaii.

Maui County rolls out its Park Maui Program that will require visitors who live out of state to pay to park and will give priority parking to locals on weekends and holidays.
Phase 1 of the program will start at Kama‘ole Beach Parks I, II and III in South Maui, according to Marc Takamori, director of the county’s Department of Transportation. Plans are to eventually expand to other county parks.
Under the program, visitors will be charged $10 per day per car at beach parking zones, with options for a weekly pass at $50 or a monthly pass at $150. Parking remains free for people with a Hawai‘i driver’s license or identification card.

Community members are invited to a County of Maui Department of Transportation (DOT) virtual meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, to offer feedback on a proposed public transportation option called microtransit for Kula-Upcountry and Waiheʻe-Kahului areas.

Microtransit is an on-demand, app-based shared ride service that uses smaller vehicles to provide quick, flexible trips. It can respond to rider needs more easily than traditional buses and would help improve and complement existing Maui Bus routes.

Hawaii “Eyes on the Road” program is distributing 1,000 dashboard cameras to local drivers in an effort to address the recent spike in traffic fatalities. Our LTAP Program Assistant Director, Roger Chen, is helping facilitate this program.

The cameras will use AI to automate inspections of guardrails, road signs and pavement markings, instantly discerning between minor problems and emergencies that warrant sending a maintenance crew.

Today, we host CCPI/LTAP training event, Specifications for Performance & Sustainability, at UH Manoa Campus Center Ballroom.

This workshop highlighted how thoughtful, well-designed specifications can enhance project efficiency, durability, and long-term resilience. Attendees also gained strategies for integrating sustainable practices into design and construction while meeting the performance standards that support Hawaiʻi’s transportation and infrastructure needs.

The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) announced the completion of the Kalapawai Roundabout project, located at the intersection of Kalāheo Avenue and Kailua Road in Kailua.
The project, as the part of the City’s Complete Streets initiative, helps improves traffic, pedestrian and bicycle safety, as well as storm-water management for residents and visitors in the Kailua and Lanikai neighborhoods.
