Happy National Mai Tai Day! 🍹🌺

If a Mai Tai is part of your Oʻahu vacation plans, here’s a little history to go with today’s cheers.

The Mai Tai actually got its start in Oakland, California, where Trader Vic is credited with creating the original cocktail in 1944.

Its Hawaiʻi connection came a few years later. In 1953, Trader Vic brought the Mai Tai to the islands, where it was served at some of Waikīkī’s iconic hotels. Somewhere along the way, it became one of those drinks people instantly associate with a Hawaiʻi vacation. 🌴

So whether you’re heading out for sunset drinks in Waikīkī, dinner in Honolulu or a night out somewhere else on Oʻahu, make the ride part of the plan too.

Today marks Hawaiʻi Statehood Day.

On August 21, 1959, Hawaiʻi officially became the 50th state after voters approved statehood earlier that year.

But the story behind Statehood Day starts long before 1959.

Hawaiʻi was once an independent kingdom, ruled by its own monarchs. In 1893, Queen Liliʻuokalani was overthrown and the Hawaiian Kingdom’s monarchy came to an end. Five years later, in 1898, Hawaiʻi was annexed by the United States.

More than six decades would pass before Hawaiʻi became a state.

For many people, statehood in 1959 was a moment to celebrate. For others, Statehood Day carries a more complicated meaning because of everything that happened before it.

Our tour guides know the history beyond 1959, and that knowledge naturally comes through in the stories we share along the way on our private Oʻahu tours. It’s one more way we help guests connect with the places they’re seeing around the island.

Sometimes knowing the story behind a place adds another layer to the experience.

Whether you’re heading to dinner, walking along the beach, or just enjoying the evening, Friday nights are a great time to experience Waikīkī after dark.
