My life rule going forward is simple, if you weren’t there before I moved to Texas, don’t come lookin’ for me now. That’s where the line got drawn. Everything before that was the foundation, everything after that had to be earned, and I won’t entertain anyone new trying to earn a place in my life now. When all this is over, I’ll travel this world alone and I’ll do it on my own terms. No need for company, no need for explanations, and no need for people tryin’ to figure me out. I’m not a teacher, and I’m not here to raise grown folks or mentor the young through their mess. I’ve got no patience for manipulation, selfishness, or people movin’ through life only thinkin’ of themselves. I don’t live my life by the wants, standards, or expectations of other people, and I never will. I walk my own road and carry my own weight. Some might mistake my distance for hate, or think I’ve turned into some bitter man, but truth is this modern world made me into a misanthrope. I don’t trust modern people much, and I don’t care for what most have become. Too much vanity, too much selfishness, too much noise. If you didn’t know me before the scars, before the losses, before life took its pound of flesh, then I got no interest in knowin’ you now. Back home, I’ll be an intentional recluse. Most the people who truly knew me are gone, dyin’, or scattered out in other states. That’s just the hard truth of gettin’ older. Texas is home, and it always will be. I love this land, this heat, these woods, these rivers, and the peace that comes with it. I’m not explainin’ myself to folks who never walked my road. But the ones who know my story, my history, and the miles it took to make me who I am, they’ll always have a place at my table. The rest can keep on passin’ by.
