The Berkeley has great transit connections and some interesting local history as seen in these before and after photos.

The Berkeley is about 800 steps or .4 miles northeast from one of the largest transit hubs in the city— The Jackson Heights - Roosevelt Avenue / 74th St. Station. By subway, it's about 15 minutes to midtown, also about 15 minutes to the JFK Air-train. It's where IRT ( #7) and IND (E-F-M-R) subway lines intersect and connect with bus routes to LaGuardia (Q70-SBS & Q47), Midtown (Q32), and Queens Center / the Rockaways (Q56).

The transit facility itself sits on a triangular plot of land created by the three-way intersection of 74th Street, Broadway, and Roosevelt Avenue.

These before & after photos show, from the same vantage point, that plot of land in the 1920s and today. The vantage point is from the intersection of 75th & Broadway, looking northwest towards Roosevelt & 74th. BEFORE: [undated] is a view looking at the site before a transit center was built. AFTER: [undated] Same view today with the current transit center built; it had opened in 2005. This is the 2nd facility constructed to house the transit center. The previous structure - The Victor Moore Arcade, was demolished to build the current facility, but that's another story.

NEWS FROM THE BERKELEY GARDEN

Rescued in our Garden by two of our alert shareholders and members of the Garden Committee, this is a Thick-billed Murre, a beautiful sea bird that couldn’t take flight- it likely came from up North- they forage South when waters freeze.

They brought it to The Wild Bird Fund (WBF) who will rehabilitate and release her.

The WBF is a wonderful organization that cares for injured birds. They’re worthy of your donations. Locally they’re on Columbus between 86th and 87th. You can call them for other small creatures too, like squirrels. You have to take the animals in. Well worth a visit!

Thanks to Katherine & Tom for their efforts!

You never know who’ll show up in the Berkeley Gardens 😃
