I firmly believe that trying the local food counts as cultural research.

Bermuda has plenty to investigate. 🇧🇲

Traditional favorites include the Bermuda fish sandwich, codfish cakes and the famous Sunday codfish breakfast, which traditionally combines salted cod with potatoes and other accompaniments. And then there are Bermuda's famous drinks—especially the Rum Swizzle.

Some people visit museums.

I apparently conduct research with a fork and cocktail glass. 🍹😂

“Bermuda has more than 400 years of stories to tell.”

I expected gorgeous water and pink beaches.

I didn’t expect to become so fascinated by Bermuda’s history.

Permanent English settlement began in the early 1600s, with St. George’s established in 1612. Over the centuries, Bermuda became deeply connected to British, Atlantic and maritime history—something you can still see everywhere from St. George’s to Hamilton to the Royal Naval Dockyard.

This is exactly why I love exploring beyond the cruise port. The beach might get you there—but the stories make you remember the place.

When you travel, how important is learning about the destination’s history?

A year ago, travel felt very far away.

Now I’m looking back at a year filled with sloths in Roatán, stingrays in Grand Cayman, crystal-clear water in Grand Turk, the Florida Keys, Bermuda, Ocean Cay, and that unforgettable Manhattan skyline from the deck of a cruise ship.

September 9 marks one year since I got my mobility, independence, and ability to simply go back.

And somewhere along the way, my cruise obsession got completely out of control. 😂🚢

This year has been about so much more than checking places off a list. It has been about appreciating every single moment I once worried I might not get back.

Wait…Bermuda really IS one of the points of the Bermuda Triangle. 😳

You hear about the Bermuda Triangle your entire life, but standing in Bermuda makes the whole legend suddenly seem a little more real.

The famous—but loosely defined—triangle is generally described as stretching between Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico. And while the stories of mysterious disappearances are legendary, NOAA says there’s no evidence that mysterious disappearances occur there more frequently than in other heavily traveled areas of the ocean.

So sadly, no aliens were spotted on this trip.

Unless you count the ducks 👽😂

Bermuda Triangle believer—or firmly on Team Science?

Sometimes the best beaches aren't the famous ones. 🩷

Everyone talks about Horseshoe Bay—and for good reason—but John Smith’s Bay deserves some attention too.

This South Shore beach has Bermuda’s beautiful pale-pink sand, reefs nearby for snorkeling and a more relaxed feel. And here's the part I didn’t know: it was named for Captain John Smith, who later created one of the earliest maps of Bermuda.

Beautiful beach + unexpected history = exactly my kind of travel stop.

This isn’t just a yacht club—it’s part of Bermuda history.

While exploring Hamilton, I learned a little more about the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

It was founded in 1844, when a group of British Army officers and Bermudian sailors came together to establish a sailing club. Today, it remains an important part of Bermuda’s maritime culture.

And yes…sitting near the water looking at beautiful boats did briefly convince me that I should probably own a yacht.

My bank account has since intervened. 😂

I had no idea Bermuda had THIS much sailing history. ⛵
Bermuda and sailing go together in a BIG way.

In 2017, Bermuda hosted the 35th America’s Cup, one of the most famous sailing competitions in the world. The event brought international racing right to Bermuda’s waters and added another chapter to an island already deeply connected to maritime history.

Seeing all the yachts, marinas and sailing history around the island made a lot more sense once I learned this.

Would you rather WATCH an America’s Cup race or actually be on one of those boats? ⛵

Things I Learned in Bermuda: Even the cemeteries tell a story.

One thing I noticed while exploring Bermuda was how different many of the cemeteries look from those at home.

Many traditional Bermuda graves are partially above ground, with raised stone or vaulted tombs. One practical reason? Bermuda has hard limestone and relatively shallow soil, which can make deep digging difficult. Some of the island’s historic cemeteries also tell the stories of sailors, soldiers, yellow fever epidemics, convicts, families and generations of Bermudians.

Travel has a funny way of making you curious about things you never expected to be researching…including cemeteries.

🇧🇲 THINGS I LEARNED IN BERMUDA 🇧🇲

I went to Bermuda expecting pink sand, turquoise water and Rum Swizzles.

I came home knowing way more than I ever expected about cemeteries, sailing, the America’s Cup, the Bermuda Triangle, island history, local food…and yes, still thinking about the Rum Swizzles. 😂

So this week, I’m sharing some of my favorite “Wait…I didn’t know that!” moments from Bermuda.

Because sometimes the best part of traveling isn't just seeing somewhere new.

It's discovering the stories behind it.
